Red's older sister always used to complain of how noisy he was. After she died, being quiet was his only way of paying her respects.
Red never had a sister. I've never seen anything hinting so. I just thought it was interesting way to give that type of reason of why he didn't talk... When I was younger, also thought protagonist LeafGreen's original design (the one with the simple black dress) was Red's sister, so this is also a nod to my 12 year old self lol
