No matter what I wore I would still be conspicuous. "The new girl". A title I was familiar with having moved with my adoptive mother more than I would like. In larger schools I was able to hide for my first week but in this tiny school in a town this small,  new residents were uncommon. I turned to face the mirror. In it I saw a ghostly pale girl with glasses masking half her face. I slipped in my contact lenses and walked to the wardrobe.
I needed something that wouldn't contrast my ghostly complexion too badly, my one stand out feature. Slowly I flicked through my wardrobe a cream turtle neck, that would do. I changed and left the house. The weather reflected my mood with rain so I took my car. Nothing too noticeable, just a small black Ford. The drive was slow on soaking roads. All the small shops were made off the same brick and I couldn't see a chain store in site, this town was really small. When I arrived the school's parking lot was almost full so I drove round for a while before finding the very last space in one of the most densely crowded areas on the campus. Amazing. I climbed out of the car and whispers came from the group of girls nearby. One of them slowly approached. "Hi Alison," she said timidly. I never really understood why people were intimidated around me, I wasn't really very different from other children my age other than a larger thinking capacity that spanned outside of gossip and drama plus my almost albino in skin tone I didn't stick out. She began again, "I'm Mia and I am touring you today." She grinned, the effect never lasts long, it's a shock people get that wears off quickly. Maybe it's being new. Mia seemed nice enough, "Just Alice and I'm in block 3 Chem with Mr..." the print out smeared off after that into a smudge of black ink. "Hahahaha" she fake laughed, "Me too Alice."
I ended up walking to classes with Mia the rest of the morning, all of them mundane and dull and stuff I had covered before in other schools. Mia persisted to ask many uncomfortable questions  about my old school and what it was like, which forced me to explain all my moving and change. Then the blow question.
"So what are your parents like?"
That was the hardest to explain. I never new my real parents, apparently a woman left me on the side of the road and I was lucky found by a different woman who turned me in to the local orphanage in Birmingham. I avoided the question and remained quiet for the rest of the lesson answering Mia with only nods.
At lunch I walked to sit with Mia but what I couldn't believe was the stares but they all turned their away heads quickly. Everyone had swivelled their heads. Except, a far table in the corner under barely working lights. There were 6 kids in the shadows, my people. "Who are they?" A quickly asked Mia.
"Oh they're Chris, Matthew, May, Karla, Mateo and Theo," she answered quickly
Okay that looked about right.
"Wait are they siblings," I had already guessed they were but I might as well check.
"Yes well May is there cousin her mum died a few years ago and her dad didn't want her, and Mateo is adopted but him and Theo call themselves twins as they were born the same day." I knew what not being wanted felt like.
I was surprised by Mia's excessive knowledge of 6 kids who sat on their own facing away from the rest of the world.
Suddenly all of them turned their heads in our direction. As though they were one working machine.
"Which is which?" I ask Mia quietly they seem as though they can hear every word.
"Okay so the tiny girl with the super defined cheek bones and the cropped blond hair is May, Chris is the one with slightly lighter hair, so I guess he's a light brunette, the one in the the white long sleeve V-neck with the long, flowy style and dark wavy hair is Karla, the tallest one who's like 6 foot 10 is Matthew he's actually the youngest, Mateo is the dark haired one who doesn't look like the rest and Theo is the one with nice hair and good cheek bones," she gushed.
By the way that last one came I now understood why she knew so much about them, I swear she was practically drooling at his name. I couldn't blame her they were all undeniably attractive in there individual peculiar ways. The "twins" especially. They continued glaring with their black hollow eyes that made their stares seem more eerie than the others. I watched Mia shiver after only a quick glance over and they weren't even looking at her, but I held my gaze. Four turned away and whispered amongst themselves but Theo held his gaze and so did Mateo. Then Theo turned away with a grin to Mateo. However, Mateo continued glaring with a look of pure disgust or was it hate. No it couldn't be he hadn't spoken to me yet. You can't hate someone you don't know.
I turned back to face Mia who face was a mix of shock, jealously, confusion and terror.
"What the hell was that!" She said flicking her eyes between me, Theo and Mateo.
"I don't like people staring," the honest answer was alway the best, most of the time. I could still feel daggers being launched from Mateo's direction.
"Oh," she mumbled quietly.
At the end of lunch I looked at my time table
PE.
I hate PE and it's not for the same reasons as most people. Most people hate it because they can't do it or can't not cause themselves harm.
However from a young age I have always been slightly too advanced for my peers, was the best way I can think to describe it. In a mini basketball practice when I was five I sprinted to the far end of the court and the teacher and all the children gawped at my speed, I was abnormally fast, which I noted to myself. Thankfully the next week my mum switched jobs and "the fast kid" was lost, I never ran at full speed since. But then when I was twelve, in track I tripped and put my hands out and landed on another girl and gripped her shoulder just a little to hard and she ended up in hospital, a dislocated shoulder. I resolved to no more accidents. Plus any ball I threw made everybody's hands hurt, this one was pretty average but I still felt guilty about it.
"What do you have next?" Mia asked me pulling me out of myself.
"PE," I answered and her face turned to a frown.
"Oh we're in different classes then," she we stated before pointing out the gym to me and turning on her heel and leaving. I still felt as though I was being watched. I turned to see Mateo still glaring, even when I met his gaze he didn't flinch he simply raised an eyebrow. Freaky.
After changing I walked into the sports hall as I heard the coach yell to partner up.
She turned her head registering me and began to walk toward me. She towered over me in both dimensions her height easily reached six foot and her arms where riddled with thick muscle.
She clearly took her job more seriously than all my other sports teachers.
"Ah, Alison, I've decided that I will assign you a partner as our sports curriculum is a little, intense," she told me smugly, "I am Mrs  Whitlock, and I partnered you with one of our top pupils Theo."
Oh great I was with this idiot.
Theo walked up to me throwing a ball, with what could be considered extreme force, I caught it with one hand.
His bright eyes almost glowed white around the edges as they showed signs of fright then curiosity.
"Well this one's fast ain't she," Coach Whitlock bellowed, at least she didn't question my reflexes. Theo however definitely did.
He somehow managed to be taller than the coach and even though strength didn't show itself like the coach's, you could tell he was stronger. As evident in his throw. I silently snuck up behind him.
"She didn't feel a thing," he mumbled to himself in what sounded like fascination.
"No I didn't feel a thing," I stated, he swivelled round with a startled expression.
"Urm, hi Alison I'm Theo," his hand outstretched to shake mine, grinning in a fake plastic way.
It reminded me of one of those creepy demon dolls.
"Just Alice," I added sharply, "Now what is it we are meant to be doing?" I avoided his hand.
His black eyes bored deeper into mine as though looking, searching for something hid deep within my soul, I could almost feel something looking through me. After a minute he gave up.
"Let's see what your made of Alice," says he emphasised 'Alice'.
The Coach told me that because I joined late I would have to fill out my track times throw speed all of her regime beginner things today.
Theo would unfortunately be tracking them all for me.
I felt the need to show off just a little. First running.
"Right so your gonna have to do 70 meters, 100 meters, 800 meters and 1.5 kilometres," Theo stated, "you can do them all today but most people do them separately."
"I'll do them today," I cut him off.
He chuckled and muttered to himself in a low voice, "You can try."
First 100 meters.
"11.3," Theo read shocked, to be honest I was too I hadn't tried to hard.
After all the others were done I was the fastest girl in the entire class by miles. Scratch that fastest person other than my timer by miles.
"Are you tired?" Theo asked hesitantly.
"Not at all," I chirped. He rolled his eyes.
"Okay I'll do your throwing rating plus accuracy."
He threw me the ball even harder this time as though he was trying to make my hands sting. I didn't even flinch and he looked more shook than before.
The lesson went on that way and at the end Theo walked over.
"How did you come to be in town again?" He asked. He was trying to make it sound light but it was riddled with suspicion.
"My mum switch's jobs a lot, but what is it to you?" I tried to sound annoying but it came off sarcastic.
"Well new people aren't common round here and what job would she get here?" Persistently asking puzzled even further.
We had not moved for a new job. Truth be told I had no clue why we had moved, I just came home one day and all of our stuff was in her car.
"Never mind," he said and walked away.
