The CELL PHONE NOVEL (keitai shousetsu ケータイ小説) is a youth cultural and literary phenomenon from Japan since 2000, that was pioneered in the English-speaking world by TAKATSU in 2008 on Textnovel. Serialized cell phone novels (CPN) feature addictive short poetic chapters of around 100 words and sparse minimalist haiku-like phrasing, vertical white space, and line breaks designed for the cell phone screen.

The fusion of casual Japanese blogging, personal emotional drama, contemporary and controversial youth issues, social media technology and online culture took the Japanese industry by storm, becoming bestselling books, movies, tv series, anime, manga and more.
