Anna's mother always told her that a village will allow witchcraft if the witch is humble, but despite her training, humility is not one of Anna's strengths. When her mother leaves to tend to a nearby community, Anna's arrogance grows, and her spells become careless. The villagers begin to grumble, and Anna's mother arrives home to find her daughter on the cusp of danger; accusations have been leveled, and there are men in the village calling for Anna's death. Thinking quickly, her mother sends Anna to stay with her Aunt Anne, a lady in waiting to Countess Bathory, hoping that she will be safe in the castle. DARK AS NIGHT is a YA Gothic tale inspired by the legend of Countess Bathory, the woman known as "the bloody countess", and woven through with pieces of the fairy tale "Snow White".
