Where magic is what defines you as a person, it is dire you're good at it. At only twelve years old, Regine Plantagenet has already found her best friend for life in Chandra Thunderblast, one of the strongest witches at Webberry Middle School. People may say that a witch being friends with a human is a recipe for disaster, that the difference in magical strength between the two will only cause problems. Regine doesn't believe that; they've gotten along for years just fine, after all. Then, Chandra breaks the news to Regine that she's been given special recommendation to Imperia, the Academy of Witchcraft. One of the best schools in the Abyss Isles and a place Regine would never dare to set foot in. Heartbroken that her best friend is being taken away from her, Regine still puts on a brave face, for Chandra's sake. This is a huge opportunity, and it's not like Imperia is halfway across the world. They'll still have time for each other after school, right? But what happens when Regine begins to realize that Chandra isn't as happy with her new school as Regine thought she'd be? Why has she been ignoring what the two used to do together? Why won't she go in public with Regine anymore? Is the pressure of her new classes getting to her, or are her new classmates giving her grief for being friends with a weak human? Or is something else going on at Imperia? And if so, what can Regine do to help?
