Luke Elias is a witch. Helena Davies is a former foster child who's had to look over her shoulder for most of her life. When she finds out she has a sister who's had it pretty easy, she's understandably angry. The anger doesn't last long, mostly because she soon realizes her sister is dead. Helena's got one way left to get to know her sister--Laura left a notebook filled with information about four families living across North America, and she claims that they're families of witches. Oooookay. But something tells Helena she should follow through with the information Laura went through the trouble of collecting. Helena gets to know Laura through her notebook, and gets to know herself through her own research. Hands-on research. (Which is actually a fairly accurate way to describe Luke.) Helena knows how to take care of herself, but is it enough to keep her from suffering the same fate as her sister?
