15-year-old Ariel Jekyll-Torrington has always felt like an outsider: in his school, in his neighborhood, at church, and especially in his family, who seem to embody the perfect minister's household. His father is a regular guest at charity functions, his mother is an avid humanitarian, his older sister is the beauty of his neighborhood, and his younger sister is the perfect little angel. Ariel, meanwhile, is different: ugly and cursed in appearance, quiet and awkward, drawn to dark clothes and sinful hobbies, and bristling with dangerous occult abilities he can't control. When these abilities get out of hand at a charity dinner, Ariel is abandoned by his family and consigned to spend the rest of his schooling at Nightshade Gables, a horrific reformatory boarding school run by his menacing uncle. But secrets are hiding around every corner at Nightshade Gables, and when the ghosts that haunt Ariel give him a vague quest to 'find himself', Ariel will be thrust into a world of magic, intrigue, danger, and of course friendship.
