"Welcome to Slytherin," he said, his voice as greasy as the rest of him. "I am Professor Severus Snape, your Head of House. I do not waste time and I do not repeat myself, so listen carefully." Snape pierced us all with sincere black eyes. "You were placed in this House by a dirty old hat, but I shall decide whether you are worthy of the Slytherin name. The rules in this House are simple: Be the best, and do not get caught. Disobey the rules at your own peril." I glanced over the first years with incredulous eyebrows. Some seemed frightened; a boy with orange hair swallowed his own expression and stared directly back at Snape; another seemed to puff himself out like a cat. They did not realize that Snape wasn't threatening us. We were Slytherins. We had to prove ourselves. We had to protect ourselves. We had to be the best and go the farthest. We had to be Slytherins to survive. Snape was not threatening us. He was warning us not to fail ourselves. ------ What DOES it mean to be a Slytherin? Not like I had any family around to tell me... or rather, warn me, seeing as everyone in the Slytherin House either hated blood impurity or was too scared of the other Slytherins to say otherwise. I definitely wasn't, not that it mattered to Ron Weasley. I mean, of everyone I could befriend at Hogwarts, my heart had to choose the one person who despised every fiber of my being... Or did he?
