'I do not care for this battle anymore, in any sense. I am tired.' This shocked the soldiers into silence! How could their king speak this way? He was never tired! He was never weary, or discouraged! He had the Lord on his side! He fought with endless valour, because he fought for Israel! Yet, that night, King David himself looked ready to surrender to the Philistines. They all sat very still until Shammah asked, 'My lord? What ails you?' At this question David almost laughed. 'What ails me? What ails me?! This battle ails me!' He thumped the table and stood back up. 'Four weeks we have been here, with no food, no water, no word from God!' He began to pace around the room. 'He called us to this battle! He called us here, to take Bethlehem! Why then has he abandoned us now? Why are we mocked, day by day by uncircumcised Philistines, with too few men to fight back? Are we to wait here until we starve?! Oh, that one would give me drink of the water of the well in Bethlehem, which is by the gate! I can take no more.' 'My lord,' Shammah said respectfully, 'be of good courage. This battle is not for our ruin, else God would not have called us to it. He does all things for our benefit. This battle is for Israel's glory, and the victory shall be ours.' ***This short story is a spin-off/sequel to another book on my page called 'The Stranger of Galilee', although it does still make sense on its own.*** ***Second in a series of short stories which accurately retell famous Bible stories for Christians of all ages to enjoy. The series is called 'Campfire Conversations' and follows the characters of Martha and Lucius as they sharpen each other, guide each other, and grow together as Christians.***
