"i guess it should. but, i would rather just have it all stop."

ryn had many questions. mostly self-doubt involved. would y/n be so exposed to vampires if ryn was not here? would y/n be more safe if ryn went back in the water? they haven't made anymore progress than they would've if it was just astrid.

ryn had come to land to bring y/n to her family. instead, she fell in love with the girl who was meant to be platonically important. it wasn't fair, these emotions.

"what would happen if i went back in the water?" ryn asked quietly.

you shifted under her hold, looking up at her completely this time. "what do you mean?"

"if i go back home. to the water."

"w-why would you do that?" you didn't want to sound like you were keeping her on land. ryn was a marine creature she belonged in the ocean. but the part of you that became attached to her envisioned a life where she stayed with you- on land.

"this is my fault."

"no, no no." you repeated. "it's not. all this was bound to happen anyways."

ryn shook her head, "if ryn was not here you would not know about vampires."

"i hate that word. but, it's not your fault. im sure of it. it cant be that bad. i've been around edward all this time and so far nothing bad has happened to me or you. that's a good sign."

ryn had made a mistake earlier, revealing a secret that wasn't hers to. she had to keep quiet about the growing popularity of these creatures. before something really bad happens.

regardless, she nodded. although you could tell she wasn't convinced. "we talk about something else now." she said.

you nodded as well, thinking of what to talk about. sleep had already clouded your mind but you could stay up and talk for a few more moments.

your mind was suddenly reminded of the baby that ryn was having. by now, she should be almost due. you brought your palm to the center of her stomach running your hand over the toned area.

it was confusing, she was more than 75% through with the pregnancy and her stomach was still unbelievably fit. "for all mermaids? do your stomachs stay small when you have the baby?"

ryn chose to ignore the fluttering feeling that filled her stomach when your hand placed over it. the gesture was completely innocent but she swooned at your touch constantly.

"for my colony, our stomachs stay down, make it easier for swimming and less noticable to sharks."

you nodded. "what about the others?"

"mermaid..." she still felt weird referring to herself as one, "colony's are all different. none are the same. some are different colors, some have different traditions. is all different. there are mermaids in colder waters with bigger bodies all the time for body fat. to stay warm." she explained. the smile the crept up on her face was not unnoticed by you as she talked about the thing that made her the happiest. her kind. "my kind, are heated from inside. body temperature colder than humans. but we stay warm."

"wow."

"yes." she breathed out, eyes fluttering closed every couple seconds, sleep taking over. "have you ever been in love?" she rambled suddenly, waking up a little.

"i havent. but- im starting to understand what it feels like." you spoke quietly, keeping your truth far enough from revelation. "where did you live before here?"

"i live with ben. in bristol cove. mermaid capital."

you took it upon yourself to assume that ryn has not yet learned of the different parts of the world, therefore differentiate the states. you would have to do more research on it later, saving it in the back of your mind.
