Chasing Darkness (Sequel to Remember Me)

Part Seventeen

She offers you a short nod in response, "Yes. I asked Kanzai to work on a project for me but I'm concerned that he will slack off instead of finishing it. Do you mind working with him for a few days to help him?"

"I don't mind at all," You start before wondering, "What is this project? If you don't mind me asking."

"I have a lot of old paperwork that Netero left for me. It seems as if it was never sorted out properly so I've asked him to sort through it and organize the papers into assorted boxes. I hope we can organize some of the clutter from the main office thanks to this," Cheadle explains to you as you nod along with her.

"Sounds good. I'll head over to his office after I finish this up," You respond as you gesture to the paper in front of you.

Cheadle seems happy to hear your response, "Thank you, (Y/N). Truthfully, nobody else was willing to help him and I cannot blame them."

"I know he's lazy but I'm surprised everyone refused," You say your thoughts aloud, earning a small chuckle from Cheadle.

"Thank you for saying yes, (Y/N). Best of luck," With that being said, she leaves your office, closing the door behind her.

You finish up with what you're working on, filling it in your desk drawer afterward. You leave your office, walking down the hallway towards Kanzai's office. As you approach his office, you can already hear him complaining loudly to himself from behind the closed door. You let out a small chuckle as you knock on his door and call out for him.

"(Y/N), is that you?" He calls out to you, earning a, "Yes," in response from you, "Come in! The door's unlocked."

You enter the room, instantly feeling shocked by the sight in front of you. Stacks of papers litter the room as well as various boxes. Kanzai sits cross-legged on the floor, reading over a paper with an intense look on his face.

'Is he pretending to read that paper...?' You think aloud to yourself as you can easily tell he's just blankly looking at the paper in his hands, 'Looks like he really does need help.'

"Alright, I'm here to help you," You announce as you sit down beside him on the floor, "This is far too much work for one person."

His gaze falls on you instead of the paper, a look of relief evident on his face, "I'm glad you understand, (Y/N)! Cheadle gave me way too much work! She yelled at me when I tried to get out of doing it."

"This also isn't the type of work you're most suited to," You take the paper out of his hands gently, your eyes scanning over it before correctly filing it in the box sitting beside you, "You usually handle physical work, don't you?"

"Exactly! I told Cheadle the same thing!" 

"Well, don't worry," You scan over another sheet of paper, before looking up at him with a warm smile, "We'll finish this in no time with the two of us here!"

This easily flusters Kanzai, who's been infatuated with you since your first day here, his cheeks noticeably flushed red, "Y-yeah!" He stutters out, hoping you don't notice his obvious blush, "This'll be a piece of cake!"

He and you work together to start sorting out the paperwork. Kanzai moves a lot slower than you, but you don't hold it against him. He gets confused by certain words on the papers once in a while and you have no qualms with leaning over him to read it aloud for him. His blush only grows darker each time you do, although he does his best to ignore it.

You end up taking your lunch break in his room, eating a small snack while you chat with him. You sit beside each other on the floor as you talk.
