"Thank you," she says to the receptionist and continues to follow me out of the building.
While we walk out, a couple people turn their heads towards us and I lower my eyes at them.
One guy in particular, he's small and agile looking. He stares back at me, smirks, and mouths a word.
Goodbye.
I grab Constance and throw us to the floor, me on top of her.
Gunshots ring out in the room.
Glass shatters and covers the floor.
I look around and I see a young girl, maybe 23.
Her eyes are filled with fear and she looks at me.
She gets pushed by an invisible force and her hands are thrown over her stomach.
She crumbles to the floor.
Constance grabs my attention, I look down to her and she's curled in a ball.
Despite her circular form, she's gripping onto me for dear life.
Tears stream down her eyes and she cries out.
I snap out of it and realize that someone is yelling into the building.
"Give her to me!" His voice is loud and deep, demanding.
"Please, please, please." Constance whispers, repeating the same word under me.
"Who is it?" I ask her quietly.
Her eyes shift to mine, full of fear.
Her bottom lip trembles and her hands shake.
Tears come harsher and she opens her mouth.
"My father," she whispers.
My expression hardens and I hold in a growl.
I turn away and look around, searching for the shooters. I see a couple hiding behind a wall and I smirk.
"Listen," I whisper but Constance is still whispering to herself and not paying attention to me. "Baby. Listen to me."
Her head snaps to me and she grips my shirt tighter.
"When I say go, you need to run to the wall and hide, okay?" I say.
"But what about you?" She asks, worry filling her expression.
"I'll be okay, just do as I said."
"HEY!" I yell. "I'LL HAND HER OVER, STOP SHOOTING!"
The gunshots stop and a voice calls out.
"Go, go, go." I whisper and push her to a wall.
I pull my gun out and fire shots at the men and quickly follow Constance to the spot behind the wall.
"Here," I say and hand Constance my phone. The gunshots continue to ring out and they're all aimed at the wall we're hiding behind. "Call Noah, tell him where we're at and we need help."
"But, but.." Constance says, her teary eyes make contact with mine and she whimpers.
"It's okay," I say and rub her cheek. "You can do it, it's okay."
I watch her hands as she shakily starts calling Noah and I hear her start to yell into the phone so he can hear her.
The gunshots stop so I turn and fire off a few of my own.
"Constance slow down, what's going on?" I hear Noah yell through the phone.
"Noah if you don't get your ass here right fucking now I swear to god when we're done here you're DEAD," I yell.
"Yes sir!" He replies and the phone hangs up.
Constance starts tugging on my sleeve while I'm looking around the corner, I turn quickly to see her pointing.
A camera that was previously turned towards the opening was now pointed at us.
I raise my arm and fire a sole shot, the camera crumbles and pieces fall to the floor.
In the distance, I can hear sirens loudly blaring.
A small piece of the wall corner next to my face flies by and I push Constance back.
Her cries get louder and the shots seem endless.
"Shhh, it's okay. Noah's going to be here soon and he'll get us out of this, it's okay," I try to quiet her down as screams are coming from the shooters.
I pick her up and place her on my hip as the shots stop.
"It's clear, sir!" Noah yells out.
Constance continues to cry into my shoulder and I carry her to where Noah stands.
All of the furniture has holes in them and are mostly knocked over.
I rock Constance and Noah looks at us worriedly.
"Are you guys okay?" He asks.
"We're fine," I reply. The sirens in the distance get louder and I look at him. "We need to leave."
"Yes, sir!" Noah says. He leads us into the hallway and checks every corner before we go into it.
Soon enough, we're out of the building and into a vehicle.
"Stop by an ice cream shop," I order.
Noah nods to tell me he understands and I go back to comforting the small girl in my lap.
The outside world spins by and I try not to zone out.
Constance sits in my lap, both her hands gripping my suit tightly and she has her head shoved into my neck.
"Sweetie?" I whisper to check if she's awake.
She whimpers and tightens her grip.
I slowly pet her head and rock her back and forth, hoping to make her feel better.
"It's okay, we're not in there anymore. No one is going to hurt you baby," I whisper sweet nothings to her.
I don't know what to do..
