as expected, she didn't react to his faint touch, just continuing to sleep. looking back up from y/n, it was his turn to order what he wanted. he did just that, thanking the barista after she took his order. he walked to the two person table that sat beside the window, soon sitting down on the chair. it had been drizzling all morning, it being quite perfect for river.

all he wanted to do in this moment was read and relax. knowing how y/n worked, he knew she'd be no interruption to him while he relaxed.

it didn't take long before his cup of hot chocolate was brought to him. river thanked the girl who brought it to him, glad to have the satisfying taste of hot chocolate to cover his tastebuds. with a content grin on his face, he grabbed his book that was nestled in the bottom portion of the stroller, opening it to his previous page.

he read as he sipped his drink, glad he was finally taking advantage of the time he had to himself, giving himself the time he needed to refresh his mind.

everything was quiet, besides the small amount of chatter between the people who also sat in the cafe and the occasional noise of  coffee being brewed, something getting cleaned or something getting served. no out of the normal noise, but from the corner of his eye - he saw y/n's hands move a bit. leaning his head forward, he peeked into the stroller, curious if she was still sleeping and just moving or if she had finally woken up.

her little feet moved from underneath the blanket, her head too turning to the side. acting quickly, he flipped his book over, setting it face down onto the table. setting his hands on the handle, he gently moved it back and forth - hoping that could potentially lull her back into the deep sleep she had been in. not everything went according to what river had hoped.

a small whine came from her, that being enough for river to hear before he went to get her out from the stroller she was strapped into. swiftly, y/n was in rivers arms - being a bit fussy due to sudden hunger. river seemed to know what she needed with ease - not needing more than a minute to get her a bottle that would satisfy her hunger.

as she ate, she remained quiet - the only sound coming from her being covered by the quiet music playing within the coffee shop. river grinned down to her, glancing out towards the rain falling outside whilst he sat there, feeding her.

"you like it here don't you y/n?"
river questioned quietly, seeing as she calmed down. her being calm and comfortable within the cafe, caused a small spark in his heart to form.
it was heartwarming and river enjoyed it, it was one of the emotions many people sought for. contentment.

"do you wanna try some?" river cooed to his toddler, leaning forward to look at her face. y/n wasn't one for many words yet, still figuring things out as a child would - but he could see something in the glimmer of her eyes that would convey the message she would've wanted to say.

"it's hot chocolate, my favorite." he said gently. y/n looked towards him, nodding her head slowly.

river brought the mug filled with warm liquid slowly to her face, holding it so she wouldn't drop it. she took a cautious sip, a small chocolate residue forming above her lips. "nice chocolate mustache," he chuckled, bringing the mug towards his lips afterwards. placing it down, he looked back to y/n, now having his own chocolate mustache.

y/n became amused with what she saw on his face, causing her to giggle. "funny papa..." she said, river chucking with his eyes squinted.

having spent many hours of the course of a few years with his daughter in the cafe, the feeling he first experienced two years earlier managed to stay the same. it felt the same, and river didn't mind.

it was a strong sense of happiness he received when with her and he appreciated feeling it whenever he was around his young girl - in his heart, he knew
y/n experienced the same thing.

over the course of a few weeks, y/n began collecting items for her upcoming halloween costume - usually in her time spent her aunts. but it was now time for her to finally put all the pieces she collected with the help of others, together. she was extatic.

in the moment, she stood in front of river, watching as he held the yellow bandana. he smiled gently as he began wrapping it loosely around her neck. although both of them were quite expressionless, river saw her smile throughout the day - that causing him to do the same. he mirrored his daughters happiness and he didn't complain about that.

"ready?" he questioned, resting his hands on his thighs. y/n quickly nodded, looking to him directly. "let's get going then." river stood up and placed his hand on the top of her head, turning to face some of his siblings that wanted to spend the holiday with their niece.

"pictures first."

river nodded, surprised he almost forgot what he did most often. "yeah, pictures!" he soon said enthusiastically.

pictures had always been quite important to river, far more than they were to y/n. she didn't exactly understand the importance of photography and the overall point of having it, but as she'd get older river knew she'd learn to appreciate all the moments they caught on photo.

for a couple of minutes, y/n had to wait for the adults around her to get the photos they wanted before she could leave and collect the gold she knew as candy. the wait she experienced felt far longer than it was, but she knew - just letting them get what they wanted would make things end sooner.

"can we go now?" y/n asked, specifically to river.
he nodded, rustling her hair. "yes y/n."

a quick smile appeared on her face, quickly running to the front door. river chuckled to her, following after her along with his siblings. she walked a little ahead of them all, river's eyes staying on her as she did so.

"every year she seems to get more eager for this day. it's kinda cute." river laughed, talking to rain who walked beside him.

"she's smart. it's the one day a year where she can get as much candy as she wants without it being looked at as a problem. the older she gets the more leeway she'll have with the amount she can consume. no wonder she's so excited about it." she laughed, glancing to river as she spoke.

as they neared the first house, y/n gradually became more excited. she gave a look to river quickly, almost as if she was checking to see if he felt the same way she did. river had a smile on his face, nodding his head curtly - encouraging her to go get the treasure she wanted.

y/n picked up speed, briskly running up the drive way to the door that had a few other kids waiting eagerly for the house owner to answer. giggling, she ran a bit faster - her goal being to join the other kids to get what it was she wanted.

she made it just in time to join the other kids in the well known saying.

"trick or treat!"
