Rain fell relentlessly, matching the weight of what had just happened. The world seemed to weep with us. I couldn't tell if I was feeling anything anymore—if you could even call it a feeling. It was all just... nothing. A hollow emptiness that swallowed everything inside me, leaving me numb, untouched by the tears around me.
I felt empty.
Others cried openly, their grief pouring out in waves. But some of them? Some of them didn't let their grief show the same way. Some of them channeled it into something else—anger.
"She can't be dead!" Timmy's voice cracked, harsh and desperate, as he stormed forward, his fists clenched. The others flinched back, instinctively distancing themselves, but I stayed where I was, unmoved. "She's just trapped!"
Riven grabbed Timmy's arm, trying to pull him back. "It's okay, girls. Go ahead. Let it out," he said, his voice soft but firm, like he was trying to reassure everyone, including himself.
Flora's voice trembled as she spoke. "Tecna was a great fairy."
Layla stood apart, her gaze fixed on the ground, unwilling to meet anyone's eyes. "And she saved the entire Realm of Tides with her sacrifice." Her words were cold, like she was holding herself together by the thinnest thread.
Bloom's fist clenched so tight I could see the muscles in her arm tense. Her tears fell silently, streaking her face as she spoke. "Tecna always had hope in her eyes."
"Yeah..." Musa murmured, her voice soft, almost wistful. A sad smile danced across her lips for a moment before it vanished. "Especially when she was about to try to make a joke."
"I wish I laughed more," Stella's voice cracked, the sobs coming in harsh, unrestrained bursts.
Bloom hid her face in her hands, as if trying to shield herself from the reality of it all. "Me too..."
I couldn't stay there any longer, listening to their pain. I couldn't stand seeing all of them hurting so much. So I walked away, the weight of it all making each step feel heavier. I found myself under a tree, away from the others, and sat down in silence. I pulled my knees close to my chest and rested my chin on them. The tears that had been silently building up finally found their release, though I made no sound, no protest. I let them fall without trying to stop them. Tecna... we had lost her. And that truth felt unbearable, like an emptiness that stretched on forever.
Grief comes in many forms. Anger, guilt, shock, profound sadness—all of those emotions cut through you like knives. But what I felt was different. Denial. The kind of denial that settles into your bones when you lose someone you never thought you were close to, someone you never imagined you'd miss this much.
