He shook his head, reaching his hands out to forcefully stop her and straighten her shoulders.

"Wha- Kayden!" She pouted. "You ruined the experiment!"

"Better that than a broken face or dislocated shoulder Lila!" He called over his shoulder, already pushing open the door to the school exit. "You'll run into something that way."

He started truly sprinting once he was outside, determined to get home before Erica, or worse, Uriel.

He twisted and wove around the humans with ease. They didn't even really seem to notice, most of them having their noses buried in their phones with earbuds tucked into their ears.

Oh, the benefits of modern technology.

Kayden unlocked the front door and shut it behind him, gasping for air and slumping against the closed door, half expecting Uriel to pop out from the corner leading to the kitchen.

After waiting for six seconds, and realizing he had truly beaten all of his siblings, he allowed himself a sigh of relief. His backpack slipped off his shoulder and hit the ground with a muted thud. He gave himself ten whole seconds of relaxation and caught his breath before he picked up his bag and dashed for his room.

He had to make sure he seemed put together for when Uriel, Erica, and Yvonne burst through the door. Appearances could be deceiving, but they were everything. Especially for sirens.

One thing Kayden prided himself on was being able to see through them.

His siblings weren't as lucky.

Except for Uriel. Uriel had skills in observation... unfortunately.

Flinging his backpack onto his bed, Kayden faced his mirror.

His black-framed glasses and illusionary brown eyes stared back at him.

He was surprised to feel hatred.

This wasn't him. It never was. It never had been. But it hadn't actively bothered him to alter his appearance before.

Why did it now?

He dropped the illusion, his blue eyes with grey flecks appearing within a blink. This was Kayden.

The real Kayden.

A stab of hurting pain hit his heart and he cried out, nearly bending over in half, clutching at his chest as tears escaped his eyes. With a hiss, he rubbed his fist into his heart, and it stopped stinging as quickly as it had started.

What the actual fuck was that?!

His head snapped up to face the mirror again, and he was startled to see the effect the tears had on his eyes.

They looked bluer and shone silver and white.

Huh. Look out world, Oceania Remembered is a pretty crier.

He snorted derisively at himself then and paused when song lyrics entered, unbidden, into his head.
