Gerard wiped the stray tear with his free hand and placed a tender kiss at the corner of Frank's mouth, feeling him inhale sharply as he did. He moved away slightly and ran his hand through Frank's hair, before pulling him into his chest and holding him close.
"I want this to work Frank" he said quietly. "I'm sorry if I've made the last few days more difficult that necessary, but please believe me, I want this. I want us."
Frank clung onto Gerard, feeling the other move sideways slightly to put the cake on the counter, before feeling the full force of Gerard's arms around him.
"I want this too Gee" Frank sighed. "You know that right?"
"I'm so happy to hear that" Gerard mumbled into Frank's hair.
Parting slightly, Frank stretched up to meet Gerard's mouth. They kissed so delicately, yet it caused instant goosebumps to rise all over both men. The romantic surrounding of the room making this kiss feel more special than any they had ever shared, both pouring every ounce of love they had into it.
"I love you Gee" Frank spoke quietly.
Gerard beamed back at him. "I love you too Frankie."
"You didn't have to do all this you know?" Frank told Gerard, although he was secretly thrilled that he had. He hadn't mentioned his birthday at all this week, not wanting to put any pressure on Gerard to do something special with him, so the fact that he had remembered of his own accord meant everything to him.
"It's not a lot Frank" Gerard laughed. "Just some candles and a stupid fucking cupcake. I did get you a present though" he added, almost sounding embarrassed.
He took Frank's hand and led him to his bed where they sat and Gerard handed him a small, neatly wrapped box.
"I didn't expect anything Gerard" Frank told him, holding the gift in his hand.
"It's nothing to get too excited about" Gerard replied. "And just say if you don't like it. I won't mind."
Frank knew he would like it. Gerard could have literally wrapped up his toenail clippings and Frank would like it (well maybe not that), but simply because he'd remembered. Because he'd put thought into making this evening nice for Frank. Honestly, he was overwhelmed. He could tell Gerard was nervous about him opening it and not liking it though, so he was even more determined to show him that he loved it.
And he genuinely did.
It was a thick, heavy, black wrist chain; slightly gothic looking, with about a half inch flat plate on the surface. Inscribed on the plate was a simple G&F. Frank had to force himself not to fucking cry again, but he was blown away by it. Gerard had clearly put thought into it. It was just Frank's style, but the initials on it were what choked him up the most.
"I love it" he said as he ran his thumb over the letters.
He ventured to look at Gerard, who visibly let out a relieved breath. He'd been nervous of Frank finding this gift a little too personal, but he really wanted to show him that he'd totally forgiven him, and that he wanted them to make this work. He wished he could've afforded a real fucking gold one for him, but he just couldn't, and this was somehow more Frank anyway. He knew Frank wasn't bullshitting him, and that he really did love his gift, and he was so relieved about that, sensing that this was the new start they both needed. This was their way forward and a chance to forget all the shit of the last week. They loved each and that was what really mattered.
"So?" Gerard began. "What do you want for dinner? My treat."
"No. It's fine Gee" Frank replied.
"Shut up Frank. It's you're birthday. Now? You wanna go out somewhere? Get a takeout? Up to you babe."
Frank stilled at the word 'babe', again totally overwhelmed by Gerard's pet names for him tonight. He couldn't hold back his smile and just shrugged.
"Come on. What do you fancy? Chinese? Pizza? Tacos?"
"Um. Chinese?" Frank asked. They always had pizza, so Chinese would be a nice change.
"I'm glad you said that" Gerard laughed throatily. "I really wanted Chinese."
They took forever deciding what to order, before finally Gerard just took charge and ordered a selection of everything. They would live on leftovers for the rest of the week, which was fine by him.
Sitting together a little while later once they were finally tucking into their food, it was like everything from the past week had just disappeared. There was no awkwardness at all now; they were back to being totally comfortable around each other. Frank couldn't stop touching his bracelet and Gerard was thrilled about that.
"God I can't fucking move now" Frank sighed rubbing his belly. "Wanna watch a movie?" he added.
"Sure" Gerard replied. He'd really missed just lying with Frank and cuddling up watching movies.
He took their plates over to the sink while Frank got into his pyjamas. Some of the candles had extinguished now, making the room even darker and cosier with just a few still flickering. Gerard got into his bed clothes too and climbed into bed next to his boyfriend.
Frank slotted perfectly into the crook of Gerard's arm, and as the movie started up, he couldn't keep the smile off his face.
"This has been the most perfect night ever Gee" Frank told him as the movie came to an end. "Thank you."
Gerard pulled Frank down into a lying position and pressed a kiss to his lips. It wasn't long before they were kissing passionately, and hands were roaming. Both had missed this. It was as though they had just gotten to this point in their relationship, when it was suddenly snatched away. Neither were going to let that happen again. No chance.
They rediscovered each other's bodies that night and made love into the early hours. It was loving and romantic and meant so much to the two of them.
They woke in each other's arms the following day with a new lease of life. They were both beyond happy and both determined to never let anything interfere with the special bond that they both had. They were two halves that fit together perfectly, and nothing would get in the way of that again.
