"It's seniors only."
"Oh, that's unfortunate." I heard her say.
The room was a blur as I got out as fast as I could before she could say anything else. I fled up the stairs and started packing. Shirts, underwear, and a pair of paints. Then I went to the bathroom to fetch my other supplies. Throwing them in my backpack I realized how big of a lie I was getting away with.
Hospitals can get pretty boring, so I threw in a couple things to keep me occupied. Books, electronics, and my camera. Last I put in my blanket, I always liked something from home.
My phone ringed, and I picked it up.
"I just got a call from your step dad regarding a church retreat?" Cole said from the other line.
My eyes darted across the room, trying to come up with something to say back to him. I knew Steven would end up calling Cole, but I didn't know it would have been immediatly.
"So where are we going?" he asked.
"Come again?" I asked confused.
"You brought my name up, dragging me into it. So where exactly are we going?"
"You're going to school," I told him.
"No, I'm not. If I went to school, you're brother would see me and know I wasn't at- uh, Willern Run was it?"
He had a point.
"Look, go take a roadtrip somewhere, I don't know. But you're not coming with me," I declared.
"No, of course not," he said sarcastically.
In fear of making him madder, I stayed silent.
"So you want me to just hide out for a week by myself?" Cole asked.
"Basically. I mean, you've got a week to do whatever you want. Do it."
"You are so selfish, Beau." His words stung.
"Look, I apologize. I know I shouldn't have brought you into this, but I panicked."
"I deserve to know what's going on. You brought me into this," he said quietly.
The phone remained silent while I thought over his words.
"You can't tell anyone," I whispered after a minute.
At first he remaind silent, taken back that I was actually going to tell him, but he soon recovered and agreed.
"Meet me outside. Your backyard." I hung up.
I climbed outside my window, and went down my roof. Cole's gate was open, so I walked right in. He was standing there waiting.
"You moved fast," I observed.
"Rather you get it out before you change your mind," he smiled slightly.
"Yeah."
"So?" he asked expectingly.
I walked over to where he had chairs and sat down. I motioned for him to do the same, and he did. He cocked his eyebrow at me, waiting.
My mouth went dry and I swallowed. I played with my hands, nervously.
"Something tells me we don't have all day, Beau."
I smirked at him, "No, we don't." Then moved my eyes down back at my lap.
Before he could say anything in response, I started talking again.
"Cancer." I saw Cole's eyes widen, but I continued. "I've had it before, but it's back. I don't want my family to know because it would do more harm than good. I can deal with it by myself. My doctor wants me to stay at the hospital for a week while I do Chemotherapy so he can monitor me."
