Painting the Roses

Start from the beginning

"Y'know, you've done nothin' but diss us here, pal!" Grim said.

Cater's eyes widened. "What am I doing? I don't have time to chat! The party's tomorrow. If we're not ready, it's 'off with my head!' Hey, you kids wanna help me paint some roses?"

"Yeah uh, why are you doing that exactly?" Ace asked.

"Because red roses are so much more photogenic! Or something... and after all that, I've gotta start getting things ready for the big croquet tournament. And that means coloring all the flamingos." He sighed, thinking about how challenging it was gonna be.

"You're colorin' flamingos now?" Grim asked. "Isn't anything the right color around here?!"

"I'm starting to wonder that too Grim." You said.

"Now it's coming into focus, Ace." Deuce said. "The tart you ate must have been for the housewarden's birthday. That explains his reaction!"

Cater looked at him in confusion. "Oh no, it's not Riddle's birthday." He said.

"It's not?" Ace said. "Then whose birthday is it?"

"It isn't anyone's birthday. Tomorrow is our dorm's traditional unbirthday party. It's a special tea party we throw when no one has a birthday— if the housewarden feels like it."

"So he just picks a random day and you guys throw a party?" You asked. It was very strange to throw a party whenever you feel like it. Well, that's how it came off to you.

     "Yup."

"And why would you do that?" Ace asked.

"Again with the questions! Listen, I need these roses to be red, like yesterday. Can't you guys help out with magic or something? Oh, but Ace is on magical house arrest and (Y/N) is a total normie, so you two better stick to paint." He picked up two buckets of red paint and placed them in Ace and your hands. You saw a paint brush in the liquid.

"Recolor the roses with magic..." Deuce said.

"Can't say I've done this before." Grim said.

"Wouldn't the paint be harmful to the flowers?" You asked.

"Not at all. It's a magical paint that won't kill the beauties. Relax, it'll be fine. You got this! But maybe do it before I lose my head? K-thanx!" The five set out to work, with Cater helping Deuce and Grim use their magic to paint the roses while you and Ace did it the old fashioned way. As you painted the roses, you found yourself thinking about the dream and how it seemed like it predicted this in your life. This was more stranger than waking up in the coffin.

"Red, red." Deuce said as he waved his pen. His eyes widened when he saw the color of the rose. "Wh-whoa! It turned blue?!"

"Change, o foul color!" Grim said. "Change!" He screamed when he saw his rose. "The rose caught on fire!"

"Wow." Cater said, watching the disaster unfold. "You're even less competent than I thought."

"It could be worse." You said. "But burning the flower seems like the least amount of damage."

"Yo, maybe you should just leave the roses white!" Ace suggested. "They look perfectly pretty and stuff to me."

"It's a matter of tradition." Cater stated. "You can't have an unbirthday party without the roses being red and you can't play croquet without seven colored flamingos as mallets and a hedgehog for a ball. Oh, but of course, the roses need to be white when the garden flowers put on their spring concert. That's absolutely crucial."

"How are you able to play croquet with live animals as the pieces?" You said. "That's crazy! I'm sure neither of them want to be put through that."

"All your rules are completely insane!" Grim said. You agreed with him. Sure, you had to follow rules that sounded strange to you put this is a different level of strange. It's complete and utter madness!

"They say the Queen of Hearts made up these rules herself— she was one of the Great Seven you know. And Riddle is all about tradition, probably more than previous housewardens, tbh. I'll admit that he's well... a bit extra."

"Yeah, no kidding." Ace said. He set the bucket of paint and paintbrush down. "I sure don't have time for this nonsense. Is Riddle here? I gotta talk to him."

"Yeah probably, but are you sure that's wise? Did you even bring an apology tart to replace the one you ate?"

"Uh no...? I came here first thing in the morning!"

The older ginger chuckled nervously. "That could be a problem. Have you forgotten rule 53? 'Stolen items must be replaced.' If you're not in compliance, I can't let you in."

"Are you serious?!"

"All dorm residents must obey the rules. If I let you slide, it would be off with my head next! I hate to say it Ace, but I'm gonna need you to leave before Riddle spots you. Thanx."

"I think this guy is for real. You guys do something!"

"Why should we do anything?" Deuce asked.

You set your can of paint and paintbrush down. "It's not a big deal." You said. "We'll just leave without making a fuss."

"Easy for you to say!" Ace said. "C'mon please! I can't use magic! Hurry he's—" Cater waved his pen, trapping the four in a magical force field after the boys put up a struggle. You tried to get them to back off but it was no use. He used a levitation spell to carry them out of the maze.

"Do make sure you bring that tart next time, m'kay?" He said as he freed them outside of the maze, close to the mirror to get back to campus. "Buh-bye now!" He turned around and walked away.

"Was that guy for real?!" Ace said in annoyance.

"We hit him over and over, but he just kept coming." Deuce said. "Maybe he was using some kind of illusion magic?"

You sighed. "Well, that was a bust." You said.

"So lemme get this straight." Ace said. "We walked in there, totally tartless, but this dude still made us do that whole song and dance before throwing us out? He just wanted to make us paint his stupid roses!"

"We sure look like a bunch of chumps." Grim said. The three humans nodded in agreement.

"I guess we'll just have to get an apology tart and come back." Deuce said. "Maybe after class, we can—oh no!" His eyes widened in shock.

Yours did too when you realized. You might be late! "Oh no!" You said.

"We already missed the first bell! We're gonna be late for class!"

Grim squealed I'm shock. "I don't wanna get a blemish in the first day of my glorious Night Raven education! Shake a leg chumps! To the classroom, pronto!" The four took off running, hoping they would arrive in time.

"Hey, so what class are you guys in, anyway?" Ace asks as you ran. "You're freshmen too, right?"

"The Headmage said we're in 1-A. The same as my last class." You said.

"Hey, that's the same one I'm in." Deuce said. "We got Potionology for first period."

"Oh ho, yeah!" Grim said. "That sounds awesome!"

"M-Maybe I don't need magic for that?" Ace mumbled.
