Chapter 40: Hazy days

Start from the beginning

"Mister Reznov! Mister Reznov!" Susan called out as she walked over to him.

"Yes Miss Grimshaw?" He responded as he put his repeater rifle into Gold Tiger's saddle before turning around and looking at her.

"One of the men will be sharing with you." She said.

"Scuse me?" He was puzzled not knowing what she meant.

"Todays the day your getting your caravan out and since you said you had 2 beds inside it. You have room for 2 so how about you share with someone. It saves a lot of resources you know." She pointed out.

Robert just nervously chuckled as he spoke. "Oh no I think it's best I just have the caravan to myself. Besides, why would anyone want to share with me." He nodded at the others who were still packing the wagons, pointing out the ever present animosity.

"It's Dutch's choice, I think it's a very good idea. Keeping an eye on the likes of you." She replied rather sternly. From what he knew of her, she was quite a firm woman who hated idleness and nonsense in her camp, though she seemed to be somewhat caring.

He sighed in annoyance as he replied back. "I already told you and then I have no intentions of harming anyone. They don't bother me, and I won't bother them."

She just put her arms on her hips as she leaned forward. "It's official, you'll be sharing the caravan with someone else for the foreseeable future. And it's not gonna be one of my girls!"

He shrugged as he moved his hands in a charismatic way. "Understandable. Can I at least be given the option to choose?"

"Seems obvious to me... I suggest you get yourself ready Red Wolf. Ain't it the day you'd sort out your lady friend?" She asked though it seemed like a reminder than a question as she just walked back to the lead wagon where she spotted Mary-Beth reading a book instead of working.

Robert looked down gritting his teeth, it was a day he dreaded but knew he had to do it. Either she'd come with him and risk her life in the world he lived in or end things after everything that has happened. "Yeah...it is...."

"Mac!" Robert called out as Mac walked over from the barn. "Your bunking with me!"

"Alright, thanks...you need me to come with to get your caravan?" The older man asked concerned. In the month that had passed, Mac had been the man who was friendly to him the most, so in a way Robert trusted him the most in the camp. Even though he had heard man had a violent past when he overheard conversations between him and Davey.

He smiled at Mac but shook his head with a sad tone of voice. "No...This is something I need to do...alone."

And with that he mounted his horse and began to ride off, though just before he took off with speed he looked back at the manor then at the tree grave one last time. He tipped his hat to where the grave was before tugging the reins and Gold Tiger took off with great speed.

He went to the funeral of the lawman Sheriff Byron Green. Though he kept his distance as the new sheriff was keen on catching those who were involved in the massacre on Christmas Eve. He felt for Jessica she clinged onto him not wanting to let go. She had lost her last parent and she needed him now more than ever.

But by the time they went back to the house, she let go of him. She then showed Old Girl who was already attached to his caravan. As if she was ready to take the caravan elsewhere.

Luckily Liam and all the O'Driscolls seemed to have fled so he didn't need to worry about them being around. Though he wished he was still present so he'd shoot him for what he did, he did regret not shooting him when he had the chance. But what was done was done and now he was living with it. For now he was just confused at the sight that was before him.
