Ben went sprawling on the floor, in shock of what just happened.
"Hey, man," A hand came into view. Ben looked up and saw a tall, muscular man with hazel eyes and closely cropped dark brown hair. "Sorry about that, I didn't see where I was going."
Ben grasped the firm hand and got pulled up.
"Name's Chip," the person said. "I'm usually not so clumsy, don't worry." Chip winked.
"I'm Ben," Ben managed to get out, still slightly shaken.
"Excuse me," a calm voice appearing suddenly.
Ben jumped. Chip didn't seem the slightest bit fazed.
They both turned to see The Oh Ever So Polite and Kind Customer glaring daggers at Ben.
Can't wait for my shift to be over with, Ben thought.
"You are lucky I dodged the coffee you threw at me." the customer spat. "I could've gotten burns from that!"
"Look, Miss, I-" Ben got cut off by Chip intervening, "Erica," Chip said sternly. "Let him off, you're going too far." Chip shot her a look.
What did he mean by that? Ben wondered. And how do they know each other? A couple, perhaps?
"Whatever," Erica crossed her arms. "Let's go, Chip."
Ben let out a tired sigh and bent down to collect the cup, which thankfully didn't shatter, and clean up the mess he made.
He just couldn't wait to go back to his small apartment and be reunited with his dog, Nutty, whose fur took on an orange-brownish colour, resembling nuts.
XXXXXXXXXXX (2 hours later)
Armani flashed a grin at Ben. "See ya, Bud," he said. "Be careful at night going home."
Ben smiled. That was Armani's typical mantra every night when they close up the café.
"You take care, too, Armani," Ben left the café, whistling as he walked onwards.
The street lamps casted an eerie glow on the streets, making Ben feel ever more inclined to hurry home.
Crunch.
Ben looked around. No one was here on the streets right now, but him. He waved it off, thinking he was just paranoid.
Something skittered in a nearby alleyway.
Ben speed walked faster. He had no desire to be mugged by a city thug.
Thump.
Something had landed behind him.
Ben whirled around, clenching his keys in his fist, the key's sharp end ready to sink into flesh.
To his surprised, it was Chip, from the café.
"Woah, dude," Chip held up his palms. "Chill out."
Another figure dropped down beside Chip, silent and deadly. Ben drew his breath in surprise. It was that grouchy woman from the café.
"Oh, I should've just left you behind," Erica said in annoyance. "You alerted him of our presence, with all that stomping you did. Anyone could have heard you."
"Uhh..." Ben didn't know whether or not to run or to stay to talk. Two people stalking him was creepy enough, but his curiosity got the better of him. "Why were you two following me?"
Erica rolled her eyes. "Well, we needed something from you, obviously." She turned to Chip. "I didn't know people outside of Spy School were so dense."
"Like you," Ben snapped, feeling insulted. Erica didn't know how good he did in school! And whatever that 'spy school' thingy majigy can wait now.
Erica narrowed her eyes, but a brief smile came out instead. "There you go," she said. "Look who finally wised up."
Chip snapped his fingers. "Guys, come on, we shouldn't dawdle out here." He turned to Ben. "Hey, man, you're cool and all, and this isn't personal or anything-"
"Oh, just get on with it already," Erica said sharply. "Or I can do it. Honestly, I don't understand why Cyrus let you take charge of this mission."
"Mission? Who's Cyrus? What are you guys going to do to me?" Ben's voice climbed higher and higher with every word he spoke.
Chip smiled brightly at Ben, biting back an angry retort at Erica. "Nothing, Ben," Chip said as soothingly as he could.
Then he bopped Ben on the head, rendering him unconscious.
Erica flashed Chip a smile and pecked him on the cheek. "Good work," she told him. "Now, let's bring him back to Cyrus."
