I remembered how I met my only best friend here, as we joined together and worked under the same department of mental health. She was the most optimistic and kind person I have ever met in my life. No matter what the situation was, she always remained strong and positive, never giving up on the situation. Her positive attitude was contagious, and it inspired me to approach challenges with a similar mind set. Together, we formed an unbreakable bond and supported each other through both personal and professional struggles.
Aurora married a year ago, and she resigned from here to live in Quebec with her husband, Jade. She met him as his therapist when they initially met, but they both healed a part of each other that had been shattered by someone else in their lives, bringing them together in a much deeper relationship.
She was now focused on her new life and enjoying the perks of being in love. We still talk, but not as often as we used to. I still hadn't told her about my move-in with my family because she was on vacation with Jade in Paris, and I didn't want to ruin it for her. I knew that when she returned, I would have to find the right time to share the news and explain my decision. It was important for me to support her happiness and not let my own circumstances overshadow her exciting trip.
Regardless, I know she will never hesitate to come and be with me when I ask her.
This was the connection that we had. We did not need to talk every day to be best friends. Even if we reconnected after months, we remained the same as when we were together.
Aurora was happy with Jade, which was all that mattered to me.
"Knock-knock, darling." Benjamin peeks from the door, a grin on his face that makes me smile whenever I look at him. "All done and ready for your big future ahead?" He opens the door and walks inside.
"I thought you wouldn't come to say goodbye." I pout, and he kisses my cheeks.
"How could I not?" He placed his palm over his chest and gave a dramatic, surprised expression on his face. "Finally, there would be no one who would tease me about my crush on room number two hundred two; I can't just miss that."
He giggled as I smacked his palm over his chest. "You are mean."
Benjamin joined about three months after Aurora left. He started as a staff assistant in the medical care department with his perfect knowledge of chemicals and medicines, but his seniors frequently criticised and cornered him because of his liking for guys. He is an extrovert who easily tells everyone about himself, but he had no idea that the staff could be so mean to him.
It was that day that I was walking around the cafeteria and Benjamin was eating lunch when several individuals approached him and began taunting him again. He simply smiled, but the expression in his eyes indicated that he was not having it. So, on instinct, I approached him and we introduced ourselves. In terms of his extrovert personality, he admitted to having a major crush on our cafe's male barista. That's when I realised why he was being cornered.
After that day, I asked him if he wanted to join me in my department as my staff assistant, and he agreed without hesitation.
Benjamin carefully examined my belongings in the white cardboard box. "I still can't believe you are leaving."
My face sank as I listened to him. "I am sorry, Ben." I gaze at the floor. "I know I promised to be with you."
"No, you are taking me wrong, Rachel." His palms softly held my shoulders, causing me to look at him. "I'm thrilled that you're moving to such a wonderful place. Please do not think otherwise. Also, you will have the opportunity to meet family members and make new friends."
Benjamin was unaware of my family's troubles. He simply knew the basics, such as where they resided in Los Angeles and what my father did for a profession. Except for Aurora, I'd never truly opened up about them.
A weary sigh escapes from my mouth. "I don't want to meet new people."
"Come on, darling, don't be dramatic." He placed his arm around my shoulder. "Maybe you will meet someone who can finally match your dating standards; you never know what the universe has in store for you."
I scoffed before glancing at him. "I am proud of my high expectations for romance. It's men who should level up themselves." I rolled my eyes at his annoying, teasing grin that played on his face. "Don't mock me for that."
"Yeah, yeah, I know." He laughs. "But seriously, think about it all positively. I am certain you will get the cause for this change soon. Everything happens for a reason; just keep your chin up and carry on as usual.
I smiled as well. "Promise that you'll visit me?"
He moves his pinkie finger forward. "I promise."
With that, he gives me one last hug and wishes me luck before leaving.
After picking up my phone off the table, I put it in my pocket and took one last look at the space in front of me, where I smiled, enjoyed, and worked while treating everyone as best I could.
Undoubtedly, this was something I had never considered dealing with one day, but Benjamin was probably right.
Everything has to happen for a reason.
I just need to look through it carefully to understand why I was forced to get out of my comfort zone so suddenly by the universe.
