Buck had been through quite a lot of places around the country in his two decades as a truck driver. The red bull with a pink nose in front of his beard-covered muzzle had worked a lot of jobs, from delivering fuel to gas stations, to bringing fresh goods from farms to the general public, and even transporting money to banks (that last one being a bit too intense to his own taste).
But now, he had enough reputation to work as a freelance driver, taking almost any call he got, and driving his sixteen wheeler across the country to meet his clients demands.
He was lucky to get frequent gigs, sometimes being on the road for weeks with little breathing room, but free days weren't uncommon either.
Which was the case after he delivered a log load to a booming wood carving company, for a generous compensation. So he took the time to finish a very special delivery.
But as it is with most things in life, roads can be quite unpredictable, and we can't always reach our destination in time.
Just as he was about to reach New Hope, a small town by the countryside, the front tire of his truck blew out from hitting some sharp rock on the road, so he had to pull over and stop the truck to change it as quickly as possible.
He had the equipment and was strong and experienced enough to do the whole process by himself, tough the summer heat almost made him think about asking for help on a nearby farm. But he didn't like to bother others when it wasn't straight up necessary.
So he just did the whole process of taking out the damaged tire and putting the backup one in its place by himself before finally going back inside his orange truck to drive off by the town ahead.
Only to find out the engine wouldn't start.Buck: Oh shit.
He tried a few more times, even waiting a few minutes in between some attempts, but the engine would just fail before trying to rev up for a bit.
Buck could have checked it by himself, as he had dealt with similar issues in the past, but with noon right around the corner, and the fact it would probably take some time for him to even find the issue, he reluctantly grabbed his phone.
Luckily, he had passed by New Hope countless times on his career, it being a frequent stop for him and other truckers. So he had a few friends in the area, including a tow truck driver.Buck: Joy?
Joy: Buck? Been a while. What's the matter?
Buck: My truck's engine isn't starting at all, so I'm kind of stranded right now.
Joy: Really? Where?
Buck: Right out of town, west exit.
Joy: I'll be there in five minutes then.
With that, she hung up, and Buck was left there waiting, trying to find something to watch on his phone, but not really settling on anything before he saw a familiar big red tow truck in the distance.
In less than five minutes. Efficient as always.
And when he saw the familiar brown sheep, with long, curly orange hair tied back into a single large braid, coming out of the tow truck, he couldn't help but smile, as she did the same to him.Buck: Thanks Joy, you're an Angel.
Joy: That's my sister, and you know that.
Buck: Heh, true.
They then both briefly stared at the bull's truck, to assess the situation.
Joy: Sometimes I wonder if this big boy acts up just to see me and good ol' Bessie again.
Buck: You might be on to something, he breaks down a lot around those parts.
Joy: Roads aren't what they used to be a decade or two ago. Almost like government doesn't give a damn about us here on the old roads.
She sounded almost a bit resentful, and Buck clearly understood why. But that wasn't the time for any of them do be down.
Buck: True, but don't act like your business isn't booming because of that.
