Opal P.O.V
"Was I really staring that hard at him?" Opal asked, kicking a stone and watching it bounce across the cracked pavement.
"Well...that depends whether you want us to sugarcoat it or not." Bonnie Green replied, her blue eyes sparkling with humour.
Opal groaned, looking up at the bright blue, cloud painted, sky. "It wasn't that bad, though. Only we saw...ok, maybe Alec saw, but when has he ever gotten involved in romance and drama and stuff like that? And besides, crushes are completely normal, especially at our age." Mae added when she saw the look on Opal's face.
"It's just...it doesn't feel like other crushes, somehow it feels...different, it's hard to explain but this definitely isn't a normal crush. Or maybe my brains just messed up from all this puberty business, I haven't got my period yet, so maybe it's just my feelings growing up."
Mae shrugged, her dirty blonde hair tumbling off her shoulder as she did so. "Dunno, I've had a few crushes since I got mine, what does this one feel like?"
"Well...it sorta feels like being burned alive, but in a good way. As if the fire is the missing part of me that I've been searching for without knowing I was searching, or that I needed it."
Mae smirk-grinned at her, "descriptive, anyway, it's no normal puberty crush, and since you're being all open about your feelings, I've only ever felt that way about one person before..." Mae said, before being cut off by Opal.
"It's Alec, isn't it! I knew it!"
Mae blushed, but didn't deny it, making Opal and Bonnie grin. Mae sighed, turning to Opal. "Look, we've got to get our feelings sorted out, so how about we make an agreement. You help me out with Alec, and I do the same with Adair. None of us spill, either, deal?"
A smirk dusted Opal's face. "You know I would've done that anyway, right?"
Mae grinned back, "I know, I would've too."
As they began walking again, Mae smiled and said something that made Opal's heart jump around giddily.
"He missed you the most, you know. After me and Bonnie of course, but still. That ought to mean something, right?"

When Opal's alarm had woken her up that morning she had practically had to roll out of bed, since she still hadn't adjusted to waking up in time for school. And, of course PE was up first so she was forced to run around an entire oval while she was half asleep which was really unfair.
It felt as though everywhere she stepped was some sort of root or stone there, purely so that she stumbled at every step. She felt like a fool, stumbling around on the uneven ground especially since Adair was only jogging a few metres away from her, and doing so with a fluency that made her look and feel like a concussed duck.
Finally, she stumbled on an especially wobbly rock, falling sideways and landing hard straight into Adair's side, knocking him over as well. Suddenly, she was laying on top of him, lips just inches from his, and breathing hard. Neither of the made any move to get up, though somewhere in the back of Opal's mind she knew that if she tried to she wouldn't be able to stand on the foot she had tripped on.
But it wasn't that which made her not move.
She wasn't sure what it was.
Perhaps she was waiting for him to move first.
Though the more likely possibility was that she was waiting for him to close the gap.
To finalise it.
In her mind, she knew it wouldn't happen, they hadn't even spoken to each other since elementary school.
But her heart wouldn't let her move. Shit, shit, shit! Get up!
Finally, after what had felt like a Millenia, he moved out from under her and helped her up "um...I think I rolled my ankle, does yours hurt?" Opal nodded blankly, unsure of what to say, and terrified of what would come out if she tried to speak. "Well then, Ms Fraey will probably let us sit out for the rest of the lesson, which is probably a win for you, right?"
Opal choked on a laugh, and it came out as more of a giddy snort.
God, this guy makes me insane.
