7. We (don't) Have Something in Common

I hate you, croissants, for being so delicious and irresistible.

I wanted to knock Kai out when he ordered a hot chocolate with almond milk. I constantly checked my watch, and it was almost midday. It was the first time in my life that I was that late for work.

"How much lon-"

"It's for the lady." Kai pointed to me across the table when the waiter arrived with the hot chocolate.

I looked at the warm drink that smelled delicious. "I didn't order this."

"I did." Kai gestured to the drink with his eyes. "Drink."

"But I said –"

"I'm not going to sit here and eat while you stare at me, it's awkward," Kai casually spoke. "Besides, it's not every day that I have company while I eat."

The latter part of his sentence was the most relatable. I ate alone every day for years and at first it was weird but then I got so used to it that I preferred it.

"It's almond milk, that shouldn't set off the poop-cannon, right?"

I almost choked and did my best to hide my laughter. I recalled the rubbish I spoke of that morning and the look of disgust and horror on Kai's face made me bite my cheeks.

"I expected you to take this morning's... events a lot worse," I broke the silence.

"You mean when you broke into my home while I was asleep and violated my personal space?"

"I have a key, so it wasn't breaking an entrance," I muttered.

Kai scoffed and shook his head. "It's funny how you ignored everything else and only focused on the part you assume you're not guilty of."

"I don't assume, I know."

"And the rest?" Kai arched a brow.

I shifted in my seat and took a large sip of the delicious drink. "I admit it wasn't... ethical."

"Ethical?" Kai ridiculed. "You were entirely out of line."

"Hmm," I hummed.

Kai huffed and pursed his lips. He looked at me in disgust, but I didn't care, I wasn't going to apologise to the manchild.

I licked my lips and looked at him squarely. "If you want an apology, you're not getting one. If you don't want me to act unethically, get up on time."

"I never expected an apology but not getting one makes it easier for me not to give you one too," Kai mumbled.

"Pardon?"

Kai unwound his shoulders and cleared his throat. "Saturday night. My place. The... the snow."

I knew exactly what he implied but he was even worse than me with apologies. "You really do talk in stupid."

"You know what I mean."

"Are you talking about the drugs at your party?" I blurted a little too loudly on purpose.

Kai took in our surroundings. "Could you lower your voice?"

"Why?" I questioned. "Because you don't want the world to know your dirty little, illegal secrets?"

"I don't care what the world thinks about me," Kai casually said. "But I do care about the illegal part. I'm too pretty for jail."

I rolled my eyes. "As if your father would let you rot in there."

"He would," Kai stated. "I'm stuck with you because of him, aren't I?"

"Are you comparing me to jail time?"
