'I know you won't,' she clarifies hastily. 'But you're so great with kids, and ... I'm not. I'm scared I'll be the odd one out if we have a kid ... '
'That's not true ... ' Amarnath says in a low voice laced with pain which Gauri immediately identifies. 'Mothers are very, very important. If they aren't there, it's like kids have nothing ... even if there's everything else.'
Gauri's hand flies up to his cheek, feeling mortified. 'Amar ... '
'Our children will be lucky to have a mother like you. Wait and see, you will not have time for me after we have children.'
'No, never. If a kid's gonna come between us, I don't want one at all!' Gauri hugs him fervently.
'Okay, okay,' he smoothens her hair, surprised at the intensity in her voice. She inhales deeply, burying her face into his chest.
'And did you say children? As in plural?' she suddenly looks up, narrowing her eyes. 'You mean we'll have more than one kid???'
Amarnath blinks. 'Children will get bored if they're alone ... '
'I'm a single child and I was perfectly fine. Eight hours at school was more than enough. I really appreciated the peace and tranquillity at home.'
'I know that word,' he tries to cheer her up. 'You had said it before. It means ... the state of being calm!'
Gauri doesn't listen. 'As it is your job demands so much from you. I'm prepared for that. But I can't share your affection with anyone else. I really can't handle that ... ' she says, tearing up again. 'It's fine if you think I'm selfish ... but I just can't han-'
'Gauri,' he holds her by the shoulders and says steadily. 'Look, I'm okay with no children. I'm okay with one child. I'm okay with anything. I haven't even thought about all that. I just want you. That's all that matters to me.'
Gauri's lips curve into a little smile. Amarnath leans forward and adds. 'If you give me eleven children like the Indian cricket team, I'm okay with that also.'
Gauri slaps his chest, half-crying and half-laughing.
He smiles, running the back of his fingers against her cheek. 'Don't be sad. That's the only thing I'm not okay with.'
She hugs him again. 'Good. Just love me the same way and I'll be happy... '
He locks his arms around her. 'Same way means? Like that night in your house?'
Gauri lifts her head to look at him gamely. 'Yes, like that as well.'
'When can I love you like that again?' He raises his brows.
Gauri tries to push him away half-heartedly but in vain.
'God, you're too strong,' she huffs. 'Now lemme go!'
Amarnath doesn't. 'You asked me if you could sneak into my room yesterday.'
She pauses, considering it. 'I will, in Bombay. We'll go to your house first.'
His eyes light up. 'Really?'
'Really. I miss it.'
His grip around her gets tighter, ears turning a bright shade of red. 'Miss what?'
'I miss everything you did that night ... don't you miss it?'
'Yes. I miss that sound you made ... '
'Uff! You're obsessed with that sou-'
'Chachu!' Kamala comes running into the room.
Amarnath steps away from Gauri, blinking. Gauri smiles, pushing her hair back. He picks Kamala up. 'Ki hui gudiya?'
'Chachu, see-saw!' she exclaims. 'See-saw! See-saw!'
'She wants to go to the park?' Gauri asks.
'No,' Amarnath laughs. 'She sits on my back when I do push-ups. She calls that see-saw.'
'Oh, I wanna watch it,' Gauri smiles as they head to the courtyard.

'Why are you still here? Go make tea,' Vishwanath tells his wife. 'Pitaji is waiting from that time.'
Pitaji, however, is engrossed in some other thought. He stares at the unlit beedi in his hand and frowns. He lights it up with a matchstick but doesn't take a smoke. After staring at it more, he finally puts it off grumpily.
Gayatri blinks nervously at her husband. 'Gauri s-said she and Amarnath will ... s-she said they'll make tea and snacks today.'
Pitaji turns towards the direction of the kitchen.
'So you came out like a queen?' Vishwanath demands. 'Do you think my brother is a cook?!'
'I said no need, Ji. But they insisted a lot-'
'I should hit myself for speaking to you!' Vishwanath stands up and starts towards the kitchen. 'Day by day this house is becomi-'
'Vishwa,' Pitaji holds out his walking stick, blocking him.
'Pitaji wo-'
Pitaji gets up and stalks towards the kitchen himself. He walks to the door silently and looks inside. Amarnath and Gauri are seated on the floor, busily making aloo samosas.
Amarnath shows how to wrap the dough around the filling to achieve a triangular shape. Gauri tries to do the same. He says something and she elbows him in the stomach. She says something in reply, making Amarnath laugh. They dispatch a batch of samosa into the oil. Amarnath sits on his knees and stirs the ladle in the oil-filled kadai.
Pitaji watches them for a minute and walks away silently into his room. He walks up to his wife's portrait on the wall.
'Did you see Amarnath?' he asks, blinking. 'I've never seen him smile like this after you left us. He is smiling because of that girl. How can I refuse him his happiness by asking him not to marry her? How? ... '
