Miles poured some pain pills into his palm and swallowed them dry

Miles poured some pain pills into his palm and swallowed them dry. It was a habit he'd picked up when life felt too heavy, when the stress became unbearable. He'd come to rely on it, even though he knew it wasn't a real fix. He stared at himself in the bathroom mirror, searching for answers in the reflection, but only seeing a broken version of himself staring back.

Then, there were three knocks at the door.

"Miles? You in there?" Y/n's voice came through the door, soft but urgent. He let out a heavy breath before walking over to open it. After a beat, he walked back to the sink, his movements sluggish. Y/n followed him in, but she didn't say anything right away. She just stood there, watching him.

"Lock the door," Miles muttered without turning around. Y/n closed it behind her without responding.

"What happened back there?" she asked, her voice gentle but filled with concern. Miles didn't turn to face her. Instead, he kept his eyes locked on the mirror, his expression unreadable.

"Spoke my mind. Eso es lo que hice." He stared harder at his reflection, frustration building. His left eye—his biggest insecurity—was getting worse, and he struggled to see clearly through it. The thought of it just added to the stress.

(That's what I did)

"I had no idea you felt that way... I'm sorry you had to go through it alone," Y/n said, her tone soft, almost apologetic. She rubbed her forearm, her gaze drifting down to the floor.

"I go through everything alone. It's not like you can feel what I'm feeling." Miles dropped his head, his words tinged with bitterness. Y/n nodded slowly, understanding what he meant. She couldn't feel his pain, but she could see it. She could see how badly it was eating him alive.

Y/n pushed off the wall and moved closer to him. She wrapped her arms around his waist from behind, resting her head on his back like he was the one place she could find comfort.

"I love you. No puedo sentir lo que tú sientes, pero I am here for you." She spoke softly, like a promise, a quiet reassurance that she wasn't going anywhere. Miles placed his hand over hers, letting her touch ground him for a moment.

(I can't feel what you feel but, I am here for you)

Miles closed his eyes, letting out a long breath before turning to face her. Her hands were still holding his, squeezing them tightly like she was trying to pour all her strength into him.

"I will always be here for you," she said, her words steady, unwavering. Miles watched as a tear slipped from his eye. He reached up, wiping it away before it could fall too far.

He looked at her for a long time, thinking about everything they'd been through together. What would his life have been like if he hadn't met her? She'd turned his world upside down, brought chaos and pain, but she also brought light. He'd hurt her, and he didn't know how she could still be here, fighting for him, but she was. And that meant everything.

You don't find that kind of love everywhere.

Without thinking, he leaned down and kissed her. It was slow, soft—a kiss that was more than just a gesture. It was everything they needed in that moment. When they pulled away, Miles pressed his forehead to hers, eyes closed.

"I love you," he whispered, his voice thick with emotion.

After a long conversation, Miles, Y/n, Aaron, and Tashi boarded the next plane to Brooklyn that Thursday afternoon.

When they arrived at the apartment, Aaron and Tashi decided to stay with Río for a while, just until they could ensure things were safe for her. One afternoon while Y/n stayed at the apartment, Miles decided he had to make a stop.

"You not gonna tell me where you're going?" Y/n furrowed her brows as she slid off the bed.

Miles grabbed his keys, slipping them into his pocket. "Call it a side quest, si quieres."

(If you will)

"But I can't know where?" Y/n grabbed his hand, stopping him in his tracks.

"Imma be good. I'll be back before you know it. I promise. Solo estoy charlando un poco, y'know? Get a clear understanding of things." Miles raised her hand to his lips, kissing it gently before giving her a soft kiss on the lips.

(I'm just having a little chat)

Y/n stood there, her expression hardened as she watched him leave the room.

Ms. Farris was lounging on her couch, laughing every few minutes at Good Times while sipping her drink. But the good mood was interrupted when one of her men came into the room.

"You've got a guest," he said.

She tilted her head, confused. "A guest?"

"Yeah, it's that hardheaded-ass boy with the braids."

Ms. Farris paused, thinking for a moment before nodding. "Let him in." She reached under her robe for her gun, making sure her hand covered it, keeping it out of sight.

"Well, that took a while," Miles said as he stepped into the living room, throwing a scowl at the man in black before looking at Ms. Farris. "I don't know if I can trust you."

"Same here, grandma," Miles shot back, taking a seat on the sofa across from her.

"Don't call me that. Makin' me feel old when I'm far from it," Ms. Farris replied, a chuckle escaping her lips. Miles smiled faintly, reaching for the bottle and glass to pour himself a drink.

"Just 'cause I got a limp and walk with a cane don't mean shit," Ms. Farris added with a laugh.

"How'd you get that, anyway?" Miles asked as he took a sip of the drink, grimacing as it burned down his throat.

"Shot. Got caught up in the crossfire. Taught me a lot of things," she said, her tone steady but knowing.

"Things like what?"

"Don't matter who you came into this game with, it's always gon' be every man for himself." She met his eyes with a serious gaze.

"Ain't that the truth," Miles muttered dryly.

"Why you here, boy?" Ms. Farris cut to the chase, her eyes narrowing.

"I reckon you know me and Y/n's trip didn't exactly go as planned," Miles replied, setting his cup down.

"What trip?"

"Don't play dumb. You too grown for that. I know she told you, but more importantly, I know you told your boyfriend. The bossman himself." Miles crossed his arms, tilting his head slightly.

Ms. Farris laughed, shaking her head. "You must think you know every damn thing. And sometimes, I wish I knew as much as you do, but I don't. So, you gon' have to elaborate."

Miles didn't blink. "Pin got some hitman on our asses who won't leave us the fuck alone. The only reason he found us in PR is 'cause you told him we were going there."

Ms. Farris raised a brow. "See, that's where you went wrong. I never told him none of that. All I said was y'all were going on a trip—"

"You said too much," Miles interrupted, his jaw tight. "Nobody needed to know we were going anywhere. He probably pulled some strings, found out we were heading there 'cause you said too damn much."

Ms. Farris sighed, clearly trying to keep her cool. "If I put y'all in harm's way—"

"You did," Miles cut her off, his voice cold. "I don't care if you feel remorse for it or not. We could've died. That's all I want you to know." Without another word, he stood up and walked out.

Outside, he climbed into his car and sat there, hands gripping the wheel as the anger boiled inside him. "I fuckin' hate people," he muttered under his breath.

A few minutes later, his phone buzzed. It was a text from Kaiyah, asking him to come over for a quick smoke. He tapped out a quick response: "Sure." Then he plugged the address into his GPS, but before starting the drive, he turned off his location and pulled out of the parking lot, his thoughts racing.
