Kaelis didn’t respond, his head tilting unnaturally to one side, his small frame rigid. When he finally spoke, the voice that emerged was not his own.It was layered—Kaelis’s voice mingled with something deeper, harsher, ancient. “How dare that wretched woman harm my mother.”
Kassia’s heart stopped. “Kaelis—no,” she pleaded, fear gripping her chest as she realized what was happening. “Please, baby, don’t.Don’t do this.Think of something good,of peace.”
But the force within Kaelis was relentless. His darkened eyes stayed fixed on Themis, who stood frozen in shock at the power emanating from the boy.Kassia could sense the dangerous energy rising in him, threatening to lash out.
“No…”Kassia whispered, tears spilling down her face as she grabbed onto her son’s hand, pulling him close. “You cannot hurt her.She’s….she’s my mother. Please, stop…”
Kassia’s body shook as she held her son tightly, her heart racing with fear. She could feel the pull of something dark and terrible within him.Her mind whirled with desperation.Could she protect him? Could she protect anyone from this?
No,Kassia decided. Why in Tartarus was she crying like some pathetic soul waiting to be rescued? Only she could control Kaelis now,so she stood up,her resolve hardening. She pushed aside the dread, the heartbreak, raising her wing of protection.
Before Kaelis could succumb to any further madness, blazing red fire erupted in his hand, hot and intense.Kassia moved swiftly, positioning herself between Athena,Themis, and her son. With her shield raised, she blocked the scorching heat of Kaelis’s flames. The fire blared, burning against her shield, but Kassia could handle it.
"Kaelis!."She shouted, her voice strong and commanding. "Enough! Calm yourself!."
But her son didn’t hear her, lost in the fury of his own power.Kassia blinked as she felt something foreign creeping into her mind.It was subtle at first, but then she realized—it was Kaelis, attempting to manipulate her, trying to make her lower her shield.Gritting her teeth, she pushed him out of her mind, gently, careful not to hurt him in the process.
Then,to her horror, she saw Kaelis raise his hand again. Her heart pounded as she prayed he wasn’t about to use his power over the flow of time.If he did, there would be nothing she could do to protect anyone—not Athena, not Themis, not herself.
Just as panic began to rise within her, someone seized Kaelis by the back of his attire, lifting him effortlessly. "I did warn you about controlling your temper,” Apollo’s calm, deep voice cut through the tension. “And now you’re trying to attack your grandmother? How can you make me love you more?."
Kassia let out a sigh of relief, lowering her shield. "Good heavens…"
Apollo, with a playful smile, rubbed Kaelis’s chest soothingly, calming the boy's seething rage. "I didn’t get along with my mother-in-law either," he joked lightly, still holding Kaelis close. "But I swear on the River Styx,I never bad-mouthed your mother like this."
Kassia shook her head, exasperated but grateful, stepping toward him. “After Kaelis told me you gave him permission to call Ares dumb, forgive me for doubting you.”
Apollo simply shrugged with a grin. “That’s different.”
“I’m worried; he didn’t listen to me.”Kassia’s voice trembled as she watched how easily Apollo calmed Kaelis, while her own words seemed to fall on deaf ears. “What if you’re not here?.”
“Do not fear; our boy is far from murderous—”Apollo halted mid-sentence,his gaze landing on Kassia’s bruised cheek. “Themis did that?.” His voice dropped,a growl of anger surfacing as he took in the sight of the bruise, darkening to shades of black and purple.
