"I would get along with her anyways." The boy muttered under his breath, his ears turning a little red.
You couldn't help but smile at the exchange, the playful banter easing some of the tension that had been building inside you. But the dread quickly returned as you approached the isolated house at the edge of the district. It was quiet—too quiet. The wind whispered through the trees, but there was no sign of life, no movement from the windows.
Grisha slowed his steps, his brows furrowing as he looked at the house. "Maybe they're not at home..." He stepped to the door, knocking gently. "Mr. Ackerman, it's Dr. Yeager." He called, his voice calm, but you could tell he also felt the shift in the air, the unexplainable feeling that something was very wrong.
There was no response.
Grisha's hand hesitated on the doorknob for just a second before he pushed the door open slowly. "Pardon the intrusion." The faint creak of the wood was the only sound in the stillness. Grisha stepped inside, and the first thing that hit you was the smell.
Metallic. Sharp.
Grisha paused just a few steps in, his face going pale. You couldn't explain why, but you already knew what you were going to see.
"What's wrong? Hey, Dad?" Eren called out, yet he didn't move at first, staying close by your side.
You stepped around him, and the scene before you stole the air from your lungs.
The bodies of Mr. and Mrs. Ackerman lay sprawled across the floor, lifeless. Blood soaked the wooden planks beneath them, their faces frozen in expressions of horror. The room felt like it had been frozen in time, the violence that had occurred here lingering like an intimidating shadow over everything. By the way Eren stiffened beside you, you could tell he felt it too.
Grisha finally composed himself enough to walk towards the woman's corpse, crouching down as he searched for any sign of a pulse, to no avail. She was dead. They both were dead. "No good." He whispered, loud enough for you two to hear. "Is there a girl nearby? Did you see Mikasa?" He asked, looking back at the both of you, still frozen at the entryway.
"No." Eren was the one to respond. You couldn't speak, it felt like your voice was stuck in your throat, stolen away by the sheer horror in front of you. What had happened? And... where was Mikasa?
"I see. I'm going to call the Military Police Brigade and request an investigation. You two go wait at the base of the mountain." You heard him, but you could barely move. Your legs were frozen in place as you stared at the lifeless bodies, your mind struggling to comprehend what you were seeing. The weight of the moment, of what you had just walked into, pressed down on you with suffocating force.
"Understand? Eren? [Name]!"
In the back of your mind, you couldn't shake the feeling that something far worse was about to unfold.
