A strange animal emerges from the trees. It has the torso, hind legs and tail of a horse but the front leg's wings and head of a giant eagle. The students step back in fear Hagrid appears, shooing the bird on. "Beau'iful, isn' he?" "Hagrid. "Exactly what is that?" Harry asks, looking confused.

"A Hippogriff, o' course. Now, firs' thing yeh gotta know is they're proud. Easily offended, Hippogriffs are. Don't insult one the las' thing yeh do. Right, then who wants ter come an' say hello?" The entire class stepped back, leaving Matilda in front, alone.

"Good, Matilda!" Matilda turns around Harry just grins at her as she looked eyes at him. "oh for fuck sake" Matilda approach slowly "Tha's it. Easy now... stop! This here's Buckbeak, Matilda. let 'im make the firs' move. It's polite, see? Jus' take step forward, give 'im a bow, and if Buckbeak bows back, yeh're allowed ter touch him. Ready?"

Unsure, Matilda nods anyway. She stepped forward. And... bowed. Buckbeak's head cocked to the side, eagle eyes studied Matilda cannily. Matilda waited And waited...
"Back off, Matilda! Back off!" Matilda took a few steps back he ducked his beak.

"Well done, Matilda! Go on. Give
'im a pat." Carefully, Matilda reached out, to lay her hand upon Buckbeak, Matilda gave the bird a grin.  "Look at that! I reckon he migh' Hagrid lifted Matilda and before she knew it she was on top of Buckbeak

"let yeh ride 'im!" Matilda smiled drops, her eyes turned wide, she was not doing that nope not in 50 years. "Hagrid no" "Off yeh go!"

As Buckbeak galloped forward. Matildas gripped tightened. "Buckbeak you drop me and we're not friends" the bird huffed and sped up, slowly the blonde haired girl gradually became less afraid.

Matilda slid backwards and they began flying higher, Matilda loosened her grip on Buckbeak's neck Losing herself in the joy of flying. "This is way better than stairs!" She shouted, laughing loudly. Smiling at the sight of her and Buckbeak's shadow across the grass below.

Matilda moved her hand down, grazing the water that they passed over. Matilda gave Buckbeak a pat.
Hagrid whistled and Buckbeak headed back, back to the paddock he galloped to a halt.

Matilda slid herself off, the class cheers to congratulate matildas bravery all except Draco, who narrows his eyes maliciously. "Good work, Matilda!" Hagrid said, he spoke under his breath "How'm I doin' me firs' day?" Matilda smiled at the giant before her, she was proud of him, she was proud of her teacher.

"Amazing, professor" They both grinned at one another when Draco pushed past them roughly, "Give me a go at that thing. If Black can do it, it must be easy. You're not dangerous at all are you you great ugly brute" Draco said looking at the bird. "Malfoy! No!" Shouted Hagrid.

Draco was too far gone, in a flash Buckbeak's backed up onto his legs and slashes down. The blonde boy froze in fear eyes wide as he fell. "It's killed me! It's killed me!" He spoke rolling around on the floor. Matilda couldn't help but cackle, she broke out in a laugh. "This is brilliant!" She said, trying to hold back her laughter.

"Calm yourself! Yer fine, just a scratch." Hagrid claimed, trying to calm the dramatic boy. "Hagrid. He's got to be taken to a hospital. I'll go with you if you like" Hermione stated looking at Hagrid and Draco, she was worried for him. Matilda rolled her eyes. "Oh common mione he's fine" Matilda said but was ignored as she laughed at Draco's pain, she found it so funny how dramatic he was. "No. I'm the teacher. You all— you all just— Class dismissed!"

"DOES IT HURT TERRIBLY Draco?" Pansy asked him as the quad overheard the conversation "It comes and goes. Still, I consider myself lucky. According
to Madam Pomfrey, another minute
or two and I could've lost the
arm." Matilda scoffed "The little git. He's laying it on thick, isn't he?"
"At least Hagrid didn't get sacked." Harry stated "Yes. But I hear Draco's father's furious. I don't think we've heard the end of this." Hermione looked at Draco with a glare.
