A Friendship Surprise

Before I could respond, I felt a hand slide over my hip. Assuming it was Klaus trying to be funny, I didn't even look over my shoulder.

"You know, it's customary for a man to pay for the woman's drink first before you do that."

"Okay, darling. Can I pay for your drink?" A deep, husky, unfamiliar voice growled in my ear.

I stiffened, sidestepping out of the man's reach. "Who the hell are you?"

He was tall, maybe six foot one or two, with shaved black hair, and eerie, spooky gray eyes. The look on his face made me want to sever the connection of his attention immediately.

"Come on, sweetheart. I don't bite. Unless you ask me to." He smiled, and I swear his canines looked twice as large as standard ones. I blinked and they were gone.

"Leave me alone." I snapped. "I'm not interested."

"Really? Why don't you come a little closer and we'll see if I might be able to change your mind."

"I believe she asked you to leave her alone." Klaus' voice rumbled from behind me and I immediately relaxed.

The man looked at Klaus, recognition seated in his gaze. "You're the one that has everyone so scared. Klaus Mikaelson."

"Oh good. You're heard of me." Klaus grinned, a maniacal glint in his eyes as he stepped around me to get closer. "I'm glad to know my reputation still proceeds me."

I cocked my head in confusion. His reputation? Why were people were running scared?

"You have no sway with me." The man remarked. "I'm not going to cower just because you're a little bit older."

I furrowed my brows, my gaze volleying between the two men. In terms of age, Klaus looked much younger than the stranger.

"A little bit older? Oh, you have no idea." Klaus didn't seem phased by the man's threat. He simply laughed coldly. "But that's beside the point. I'm not asking. I'm telling you to go about your merry way before I show you exactly why people around here are intimidated by me."

Cami swooped over quickly, her green eyes flashing in warning. "Can we not do this here? The tourists don't need an insane story to take home, and I don't need a mess to clean up."

The man turned to Cami with a vicious grin. "How about you mind your own business, sweetheart?"

"You're looking to pick a fight tonight?" Klaus grinned. "Well, that's perfect, because I'm in the mood for a good brawl."

"Klaus." Cami gave him a look that could've meant a thousand things before her eyes flicked toward me. Whatever the purpose, Klaus seemed to get the hint.

He groaned in resignation. "Fine. But next time I see this idiot in a dark alley, it's not going to go well for him."

"Never thought Klaus Mikaelson would go down without a fight. Now I've seen everything." The stranger laughed before sliding a hand around my waist and lugging me to his side. "Come on, doll. Let me buy you a drink." Then his eyes flashed red. "Or you can give me one."

The growl that emitted from low in Klaus' throat could only be described as primal and animalistic. The stranger turned just enough at the sound for me to catch the flash of gold in my friend's eyes before he spoke, long knife-sharp fangs protruding from his gums.

"Let her go. Now."

I couldn't help the way I stared at him in horror, mapping the image of him in my head, memorizing the sight before me. The man hissed back, and I barely had enough time to lurch to the side before his mouth descended on my neck, sporting a matching pair of fangs. A shocked yelp pushed its way through my lips as I attempted to dodge him.
