Two players sat next to each other, watching over the entire server from their perch hundreds of feet above ground. It was peaceful. They had no immediate threats to worry about since a break was called, and they were granted temporary immunity. All the hostile mobs had been purged from the server and prevented from spawning. And if one of the players were to tip over the edge, they would not take any fall damage.
One player sits, kicking his legs back and forth, wearily watching from the corner of his eye as the other is leaning precariously over the edge. The other's hands are simply resting on the edge, not holding on tightly like one normally would when facing a drop of death. Even if they can't die right now, the player finds that the anxiety is still present. They are both aware their time is running out.
"Y'know, I'd sacrifice myself for you." The player on the right breaks the silence. He would go out first; he wanted to take the other's place. He was willing to do anything to keep the cycle from repeating.
That stupid cycle.
Sure, he was glad it wasn't him and prayed that they were not bound together and that he would be forced to suffer the same fate. Now, though, he wishes it would end. Four of these death games have come and gone, and while he wants to win just as much as everyone else, he has been watching his friend slowly lose confidence every hour lost and as his time clicks closer to zero. He wants to stop the cycle.
"I know." The taller player scoots to the left, giving him space to lean to the right and rest his head on the shorter player's shoulder. "I wouldn't wish that on you. I want you to win- maybe even more than I want this curse to break. For the bad boys!" Not allowing the mood to dampen, Jimmy throws his left fist in the air as he cheers.
"Just because I'd blummin' sacrifice myself for you doesn't mean you get to get all sentimental and sweet on me." Despite his words, he leans into Jimmy, resting his head on the other's.
"You know you love me, Joel." Jimmy raises his right hand and lightly pats Joel's cheek.
"Yeah, so don't you dare go jumping off Skynet before my time's done."
