The dim light of the subway station flickered overhead as Y/N clutched her tattered bag to her chest, the weight of another fruitless job hunt pulling her shoulders low. The world didn’t care about her struggles. No one did. Or so she thought.
Across the platform, a man sat with an eerily calm demeanor, dressed in a pristine suit that contrasted sharply with the grime of the station. He had been watching her for some time now, his dark eyes tracking her every move with predatory precision. There was something unsettling about the way he smiled—sharp, deliberate, as though he knew something she didn’t.
Y/N felt his gaze and glanced up, meeting his eyes for the briefest moment before quickly looking away. Her instincts screamed at her to leave, but her legs felt rooted to the spot.
“Excuse me,” the man said, his deep, smooth voice slicing through the stagnant air. He stood and approached, his steps slow and deliberate. “You seem troubled.”
“I’m fine,” she replied hastily, her voice trembling slightly as she hugged her bag tighter.
He chuckled softly, a sound that was both disarming and unnerving. “Are you sure about that? You seem... lost.”
There was something in the way he spoke, something that made her feel as though he saw straight through her. His presence was overwhelming, commanding her attention even though every fiber of her being screamed at her to run.
“Look, I don’t have any money,” she blurted, backing away slightly.
His smile widened. “I’m not here to take anything from you, Y/N. Quite the opposite, in fact.”
Her blood ran cold at the sound of her name. “How do you know my name?”
“I know everything about you,” he said simply, his voice taking on an almost tender edge. “I know about the countless resumes you’ve sent out. The landlords pounding on your door for rent. The nights you’ve gone hungry. The world has treated you so unfairly, hasn’t it?”
Her breath hitched, and she stumbled back another step. “Stay away from me.”
But he was faster. In a flash, he closed the distance between them, his hand gripping her wrist with an iron strength that sent her heart into overdrive. “I’m not going to hurt you,” he murmured, his voice low and soothing, though his grip said otherwise. “I just can’t stand to see someone as perfect as you wasting away in this cruel world.”
She struggled against him, her panic mounting. “Let me go!”
“Shh,” he cooed, pulling her closer until his face was mere inches from hers. His dark eyes bore into hers, his expression softening ever so slightly. “You don’t understand, Y/N. You belong to me now. I’ll take care of you. Protect you from everything and everyone. You’ll never have to worry about anything ever again.”
Her heart thundered in her chest as she fought to comprehend his words. “You’re insane!” she spat, her voice breaking.
His smile faltered for a split second, his eyes narrowing. “Perhaps. But insanity is just devotion in its purest form.”
Without another word, he pulled a handkerchief from his pocket, pressing it to her mouth and nose with alarming speed. She struggled, her vision swimming as the sickly-sweet scent invaded her senses.
“Shh,” he murmured again, his voice the last thing she heard before darkness claimed her. “You’re safe now, dove. I’ll never let anyone hurt you again.”
When Y/N awoke, she was in an unfamiliar room, the walls bare and the windows sealed. She sat up quickly, only to find a set of restraints around her wrists, chaining her to the bed. Panic surged through her as the door creaked open, revealing him once more, his suit immaculate and his gaze as intense as ever.
“Ah, you’re awake,” he said, stepping into the room with a tray of food. “Good. You need to eat.”
“Let me go!” she demanded, her voice raw with fear.
He set the tray down and approached her, cupping her face with a gloved hand. “Why would I do that? The world out there is cruel, Y/N. It doesn’t deserve you. But I do. And I’ll make sure you never have to suffer again.”
His smile returned, softer this time, but no less terrifying. “You’ll learn to love me, sweetheart. After all, I’m the only one who truly cares.”
