Chapter Fifty Three

Start from the beginning

As they move towards the Orcs, the Dead Army materialise behind them, and charge at them, who move back in astonishment. The Dead Army overrun the Orcs, and kill them all.

Back on the field of battle, Éowyn looks up at the Witch King. He grabs her by the throat, and lifts her up.

"You fool!" He hisses. "No man can kill me! Die now!"

From behind, Merry has crawled from behind the Witch King. He stabs him behind his knee, and the King drops Éowyn and falls to his knees. Merry groans in agony, and holds his arm that has stabbed him, falling back. Éowyn stands, and removes her helmet before the Witch King.

"I am no man!"

She thrusts her sword into the space in his helmet, as she lets out a yell

She thrusts her sword into the space in his helmet, as she lets out a yell. It sparks, and he roars and the sword flies back out. Èowyn falls to the ground, as the Witch King folds in on himself, screaming. After a moment, he disappears.

Legolas is counting, as he shoots his arrows.

"Fifteen, sixteen."

Aragorn fights fiercely on the battlefield, killing many Orcs. Sam follows behind Aragorn, also managing to get in a strike or two. Meanwhile, Éowyn crawls towards Théoden.

"Merry!" She calls.

Gothmog sees her, and limps towards her. She hears him, and turns around to see him. She tries to crawl faster, as he comes towards her. Éowyn reaches for Théoden's sword, but it falls away from her fingers as Gothmog closes in on her. Suddenly, Aragorn runs pass, blowing Gothmog's head clean off, and runs off not noticing Éowyn.

Meanwhile, Aragorn, Gimli, Legolas and Sam are still fighting. Aragorn spots an Oliphaunt, and looks to Legolas.

"Legolas!" He points to it, and the Elf slightly nods.

Legolas runs towards, it and jumps onto its tusk. He swings onto its front leg, and then onto its back leg. He climbs up arrows that are sticking out of it, and makes it to the top. He starts to shoot arrows at the Orcs, while counting his score.

"Thirty three, thirty four."

Orcs run towards him, and he fights them, and drops them off the Oliphaunt. Legolas grabs a rope, and swings down to the side of the animal. He slashes twice at the straps, and the whole construction slips sideways, tipping off the occupants. Legolas holds onto the rope until he gains the top again, then lets go and stands there alone. He moves towards the Oliphaunt's head, and fits three arrows to his bow. He fires them down into the creature's skull. As the Oliphaunt drops to the ground, Legolas slides down its trunk, to land safely on the ground in front of Gimli. He smugly nods at him, and the Dwarf scoffs, as Sam stands next to him in awe.

"That still only counts as one!"

Aragorn continues to fight, killing all the Orcs around him

Aragorn continues to fight, killing all the Orcs around him. He stops, and looks at the battlefield. The army of the dead bring down an Oliphaunt, then move through the city, looking for all the Orcs they can find.

Éowyn struggles to crawl towards Théoden, who still lies trapped beneath his horse. She reaches out to him, and strokes his face. He weakly opens his eyes, and puts his gloved hand up to her.

"I know your face." He whispers. "Éowyn."

She smiles, before her uncle speaks again

She smiles, before her uncle speaks again.

"My eyes darken."

Her smiles fades, and she look at him in despair.

"No, no. I'm going to save you."

"You already did. Éowyn, my body is broken. You have to let me go."

She shakes her head gently. "No."

"I go to my fathers, in whose mighty company; I shall not now feel ashamed."

He looks at her. "Éowyn."

He takes his final breath, before dying.

Tears fall from Èowyn's eyes, and she places her head on his chest, and sobs.

Back outside the walls of the city, Gandalf and Pippin move forward to look at the Army of the Dead

Back outside the walls of the city, Gandalf and Pippin move forward to look at the Army of the Dead.

"Release us!" The King of the dead commands to Aragorn.

"Bad idea!" Gimli says. "Very handy in a tight spot these lads, despite the fact they're dead!"

"You gave us your word!" He yells.

"I hold your oath fulfilled." Aragorn says, softly. "Go. Be at peace."

The King of the Dead smiles, before there is a great wind, and the Army of the Dead disappears. Aragorn looks around, and he sees Gandalf who bows low to him.

Later, Éomer, Sam and Pippin search amongst the dead. Suddenly, he sees a familiar cloak on the ground, and picks it up.

"Merry!" Pippin says, as him and Sam exchange glances.

"No!" Éomer yells, suddenly.

He runs towards Éowyn's motionless body, and cradles her in his arms.

"No!" He lets out a spine tingling scream. "No!"

Aragorn hears him, and looks across. He sees him cradling Éowyn, and a tear stings his eye.

Gandalf looks on, and he nods his head slightly.

Later, Aragorn enters the House of Healing. Éomer sits with Éowyn, as Aragorn approaches them. The Ranger lifts up her hurt arm, to inspect it. He takes a damp cloth, and bathes her forehead with it. Éomer watches, with grief in his eyes. Éowyn begins to breathe heavily, before opening her eyes, and staring at Aragorn in shock.

A few days later, she has recovered a little bit. She walks over to a window, and Faramir watches her.
