Baby Dont Cry I

“I know you don’t want to do this Cheru, and I don’t want to force you into this. Lalo pa’t nakikita kitang nagakakaganyan.” Hinila nito ang isang upuan sa di kalayuan at umupo sa kanyang harapan. “I’m not saying this because I want to offend you or anything. I’m also not saying this because I don’t want to marry you. I just don’t want to see you shed more tears. In the last few days that we’ve been together, there was never a day na hindi ka umiiyak. And it pains me every time I see a tear fall from your eye.” Hiwakan nito ang kanyang kamay. “I just want you to be happy, even if that means backing out from this wedding.”

Cheru eyed the radio that had been playing the stupidest songs and asking the worst questions since she decided to turn it on. Kung tutuusin naman kasi ay hindi niya muli pang maalala ang bagay na bumabagabag sa kanya kung hindi lamang nagumpisang magtanong mga nakakalokong tanong ang DJ sa istasyong pinapakinggan niya.

So baby don’t cry .. cry .. for my love will protect you ..

Muli nanamang tumulo ang mga luha ni Cheru.

“Nakakainis ka.”

Question was written all over the guy’s face. Hindi naman maiwasan ni Cheru na humanga rito nang panandalian. Kahit kasi hindi ito magsalita ay sa hindi malamang dahilan ay madali nitong napaparating sa kanya ang nararamdaman nito. Tila ba kasi’y lagi siyang kinakausap ng mga mata nito. Napaexpressive. Nakakainis.

“Bakit kasi ang bait bait mo pa rin kahit na palagi na kitang inaaway? Kahit na palagi kitang nasasaktan?” Muling rumehistro sa nga mata nito ang pagtatanong. “Your eyes will always deceive you Kyungsoo.”

“What do you mean?”

Cheru unconsciously reached for the man’s face. She had always liked Kyungsoo’s face. Napakaamo kasi niyon, it reminded her of a cute puppy. Matangos ang ilong ito at may mamula mulang mga labi na tila ba’y kay lambot. The man’s smile was also, according to her mom’s words, mind blowing.  And of course, his round expressive eyes that never fail to amuse her. Kahit sino ay hindi maiiwasang mafascinate sa lalaki. Lalo pa’t napakabait nito at napakapasensyoso. Again, what was wrong with her?

She caressed the man’s eyelids, making him close his eyes, as if he was enjoying her touch. “Your eyes talk more than you do. I like it.” She muttered, almost a whisper. “But if seeing my tears pains you, I guess I’d rather not see your eyes. If it pains you whenever I cry, then just close your eyes. Pretend that you didn’t see any. I know you didn’t sign up for this at napipilitan ka lang din, but just like you told me, pwede ka ring magback out kung gusto mo. Pero ako, hindi ko iyon gagawin. I need this.” She sighed. “And it may sound really rude and selfish but I need your family’s money. Kaya kahit ano pang sabihin mo, itutuloy ko ito. Kung hindi mo ako kayang panuoring umiyak, ipikit mo na lang ang mga mata mo.

Alam kong mabait kang tao Kyungsoo. And I’m going to apologize how I treated you, and how I will treat you while we’re married. Hindi ako kasing bait at pasensyoso mo pero susubukan kong makisama sayo. I cannot promise to treat you like a lover or a husband but I will treat you like a person, like a friend. I cannot promise that I can give you anything in return either, but I want you to know that I am very grateful for this.”

“You’re welcome.” Wika ng lalaki bago marahang hinaplos ang kamay niyang noon ay nasa mukha pa rin ng lalaki. Napakalambot ng mga palad nito, kahit na may pailan ilang kalyo ito – marahil mula sa pagtugtog ng mga kung ano anong instrumento – ay maari pa rin ilinya ang kamay nito sa ilang kababaihang kilala niya. “I wont ask you for anything in return either. Basta maging masaya ka lang okay na ako.” Iminulat nito ang mga mata bago muling ngumiti ngunit tulad noon ay bakas pa rin sa mga magta nito ang kalungkutan. “That’s why I brought somebody with me. I hope he will help you clear your mind Cherubin.”
