"Lunch is in the fridge. You sure you can handle the kids for a few hours?"I asked Shadow. He zipped up my jacket and fixed my beanie. "Of course. We'll be fine. Right, kids?"Shadow asked.
I looked down to see them nodding excitedly. I smiled. "Okay. If you guys say so,"I said. Shadow smiled and pulled me into a kiss. We pulled away and I bent down to give the kids hugs.
Carter came inside from the cold. "Alright. The truck is warmed up. Ready to go, (Y/n)?"he asked. I nodded and stood. "Okay, bye guys. Be good!"I smiled as I walked towards the front door. "We will!"Haze and Maria said in unison.
I smiled at them over my shoulder and walked outside with Carter. We hurried out to the truck and climbed inside. I shook the snow from my head and put on my seat belt. Carter put on his and put the truck in drive.
We were on our way. The ride was quiet. I mostly looked out the window at the snow. I felt as if Carter was watching me but I bet it was just me being me.
Ever since the incident with Sonic...my senses heighten when I'm alone with someone. I get tense and my guard is up one hundred fold. My brain assumes things, though I know they're not true. It's a pain in the ass but it's helped a couple times.
It doesn't happen with friends or family. Just with people I'm not used to being around.
The truck suddenly stopped. "We're here. Come on, let's get inside,"Carter said. That was fast. I must've been daydreaming.
I unbuckled my seat belt and opened my door. I hopped out and followed Carter to a building. The sign was covered in blankets of pure white snow.
We walked inside. A wave of warmth hit me like a truck. I took off my gloves and stuffed them into my coat pocket. We had walked into a small waiting area. There were a few people sitting around the room. A woman sat behind the counter, typing away at the computer.
"Take a seat. I'll check you in,"Carter said. I nodded. I walked over and sat down in the corner of the room. I unzipped my coat and took it off.
Damn, it's getting hot in here. We haven't even been in here for five minutes.
I placed it in my lap and sat back in my seat. I took a breath and rested my head against the wall. I took my beanie off and placed it on top of my jacket in my lap. Carter walked over and sat beside me after stripping from his jacket.
"You should be getting called on in a bit,"Carter smiled. I smiled and nodded. About five minutes later, my name was called. Carter and I stood and made our way to the front counter. The lady smiled at us and pointed toward a door.
We walked through it to enter an office. A gray, female cat with purple eyes smiled up at us. "Come on in, you two. Take a seat,"she said.
Carter closed the door behind us and we sat down.
"How's it going, Carter?"she asked. I scrunched up my eyebrows and looked over at Carter. He smiled.
"It's going pretty good, Lucy. What about you?"he asked. "Eh. It's okay,"she smiled. Carter caught my look and chuckled.
"(Y/n), this is Lucy, an old friend of mine. Lucy, you already know (Y/n),"Carter said.
I gave Lucy a smile. "Nice to meet you, Lucy,"I said. She smiled. "Like wise. Now, we're here to discuss your children, Haze and Maria, going to school. Correct?"Lucy asked, looking down at some paperwork.
"Yes, that's correct."
She flipped through a couple papers. "They've had their shots and physicals, I see. They're set to go but there's one little problem,"Lucy said looking up at me. "What is it?"I asked worriedly.
