“Very,” she breathed, and I rested my chin on top of her head, my eyes shifting back towards the window, where the rain was pouring down even harder. We were both silent for a while, the television’s audio filling in the lack of conversation with the help of the constant clacking of rain continuing to bounce off the windows. I tightened my grip around Jamie, not wanting to let go of her. I think three weeks is way too much time away from her, and I really wanted to enjoy this.
My eyes flickered over towards the clock above the t.v which read: 8:47pm. I then switched my gaze to a different window, watching the same sight of the downpour. Jamie hugged me back in such a protective way—the same way I was doing to her. We both wouldn’t let go of each other, in fright that if we did, we would disappear.
I was about to pull away, eager to see her eyes again when I felt her body trembling against mine. I immediately froze, waiting to figure out what was wrong. I then began to hear small gasps escaping her mouth and soon, I processed it as crying.
“No,” I whispered, pulling away from our hug and brushing her hair back. “Don’t do that.”
“Do what?” she sniffled, wiping a tear that fell from her eyes.
“You know what,” I said, kissing her nose again. “What’s wrong, baby? Why are you crying?”
She closed her eyes, shaking her head slowly before resting it on my chest again. “I’m just.. overwhelmed,” she breathed out, her entire body shaking.
“Overwhelmed?” I spoke quietly. “W-Why?”
“B-Because… We-.. Because.. Because—”
“—Hey,” I cooed, forcing her head to look up at me and cupping both her cheeks with both of my hands. “Slow down,” I instructed, watching as she nodded her head. “Look at me.” She opened her eyes, revealing that lovely shade of brown that conquers her iris. “Take a deep breath.” She inhaled a chunk of air quickly, only to exhale it out slowly, taking her time with it. “Now.. Tell me what’s wrong, babe.”
She blinked three times and looked up at me, taking in the sight of me and the fact that I was really here—in front of her.
“I just.. These past 3 weeks, all I’ve been dreaming about was for you to come back,” she began, her lips trembling. “I was scared, Justin.. I was scared because I thought I was forgetting what it felt like to kiss you, or to feel your embrace, or your arms around me. I was scared of losing what meant the world to me..”
“I know what you mean,” I whispered, stroking her cheek. “It was even harder when I heard about-.. Well, about Nathan..”
I swallowed hard, feeling the anger pumping within my veins, something Jamie must’ve felt because she immediately grabbed my arms and looked me dead in the eyes.
“Justin. Don’t..” she warned. “We’ll deal with this later but.. It’s your first day back and I’m just happy to have you again.”
My hands traveled their way to her waist. “Just for the record,” I said strictly, “You never lost me.”
