Chapter 6: Wedding Plans and Canceled Dates

Start from the beginning

"Ha, it's because he's too chicken!" Percy teased, clicking his boots on. Sky laughed and Amelia sighed at her finace.

"No! I just... my legs..." James whimpered, running his hand through his hair.

"James, chill. I'm joking. I know," Percy tried. James walked away, still frowning and trying to hide his limp.

"Percy!" Amelia scolded, slapping his head and chasing after James. Percy turned to look at Sky's reaction, which was side frown and a raised eyebrow. He frowned and Sky shrugged, fixing her snow pants and finding all her things. Amelia and James came back after a few minutes and Amelia went out with Sky and Percy. Just after lunch Amelia and James went back to the cabin, leaving Sky and Percy to ski by themselves.

"Why can't skiing be warm? Like on the snow, but warm?" Sky complained, tapping the snow off her dying K2's. Percy scoffed and dropped an arm on the back of the lift without an answer. They chatted on the way to the top and raced to the bottom.

"Melia, is it bad that I don't try?" James asked. The Miracle on 34th Street played on the TV, but James' head was somewhere else.

"You were paralyzed. The way I see it is that you can walk and if that's as much as you want to do it's good," she answered, being careful not to spill any tea as she sat down. He smiled softly at her and allowed her to cuddle with him. A few minutes later the door opened and Percy ran in calling for mercy while Sky ran in behind him with a snowball.

"No snow in the cabin!" Amelia exclaimed, not even moving a muscle to stop them. Sky pouted and dropped the snow onto the fire, which ate it up quickly. Percy laughed at her and they tossed their wet clothes on chairs before taking over the other sofa.

"I hate you. I hate you. I hate you." The three of them were at the store making sure the dresses fit.

"I hate Percy Calix. I hate him. He's the terriblist boyfriend ever."
"That's not a word."

"I can make up words, I'm a writer."

"That's not fair. I'm a computer science teacher I can make up words too."

"Shut up, I'm right."

"Lies."

"Stop flirting," Amelia called from the dressing room. James had been banned from going to the fitting and Percy went just because he wanted to see how much Sky hated the dress.

"I can flirt all I want," Percy replied. Sky glared at him and turned around, her ponytail whipping him in the face.

"Shut up." He made a face at the back of her head and sat back down as she changed. The rest of the day went by smoothly. They managed to not even hint at what the dress looked like to James, which was practically impossible because he asked every five seconds. Amelia threatened to tie him up at one point, which Sky seriously was thinking of taking at one point when he knocked on the door for a full fifteen minutes when they locked him the closet.

"Amelia, James is in the closet and I am seriously done so I'm going out," Sky yelled, leaving the apartment without hearing an answer. Percy was just walking up the stairs when she walked down them, but she ignored him and walked straight down them.

"Sky , what's gotten into you in the last few weeks?" he asked, after finally catching up.

"Nothing," she said, pushing past him down the sidewalk.

"What the hell, Sky?" She turned around and blew her top, thankfully it was a Saturday morning and everyone was asleep.

"Everything has just been spinning out of control and I can't even handle myself anymore! The rent is basically making it impossible to live and you've been making it impossible to even think! Amelia has been screaming at me every moment I'm home and then I come to your apartment and you're never there. It's like everyone's intentionally pissing me off and I can't even talk to Nick about it because he's too busy with traveling. No one's been around and I'm just sick of it and I'm going back to that whole thing where I don't tell anyone anything because it's like middle school all over again. No one will sit down and listen because they're always telling me their problems and never stay long enough for mine! I don't blame Amelia, her wedding is in three weeks and she needs to blow off all this steam, but James has literally been bugging me all the time and you've never been around and I'm sick of everything and I just can't deal with it anymore!" Sky huffed out the last sentence and sat down on a park bench with her head in her hands. He sat down next to her, but didn't say anything.

"We have an expiration date don't we?" he asked. Sky nodded, not bothering to look up as he stood.

"What about the wedding?" he asked.

"Play it off till then. I don't think Amelia needs to be this stressed out plus our problems. We can tell them after."

"I'm sorry," Percy said quietly, walking away. Sky thought of that life they could have, the one they should have had, but it wasn't going to happen, so she ignored it. She couldn't go back to the apartment, Amelia was there and she'd know Sky'd been crying. She didn't have anyone else to go to close enough without money or a car, so she walked to the end of Castle Island and sat on the sand. No one was there, but her. It was too late in the fall. Sky stared at the water until it got dark and Amelia started asking where she was. Sky answered with a simple 'be home late. dont wait up' and left the beach.

Melia:

Percy's here. Where are you?

To Melia:

Don't worry about it. I had to go back into the lab and a couple of us are going for coffee. I'll be back late.

She didn't ask any questions after that. Sky walked around the bay area alone, finally making it to a park just above the street her apartment was on. She stared at the woodchips for a while, trying to will herself back to the apartment, but when she saw James' car leave she knew they all went home. Sky walked back around one in the morning, only to find that Amelia and James had fallen asleep on the couch. She smiled for them and took a picture, James' arm wrapped protectively around Amelia's waist and Amelia's hand over his. She let them be, slipping into her bedroom and was faced with another daunting thing. The pictures on her bedside table. There was one of their graduating class, one of Amelia and Sky at their senior prom, one of her sister and her playing catch in their old backyard, and a few of Amelia, Percy, James, and Sky in all combinations of those people. She walked over and found that all of the ones with Percy in them were face down. She was tempted to cry, but didn't, tucking herself into bed and falling asleep alone.
