Chapter 11

"You could have gone off to America for this.." whispered Ram.

"Huh?"

"No.. Don't I need to talk to my father?" said Ram.

"Did I?" asked Janani.

"Why don't you try?" asked Ram as Janani looked at him silently.

"Didn't your father say anything after you burnt your passport?" asked Ram.

"He didn't talk to me at all. He locked himself in his room." said Janani.

"Janani, give me a day. I will talk to my father." "Ram..?" "Janani! I don't wish to hurt my father's feelings. I understand Janani, you have hurt everyone in your family and came here for me. You need to understand too. My father has never even raised his voice at me. Janani, please. Give me a day. I'll talk to my parents, I will ask them to come and talk to your parents. Thats what is right." said Ram reaching out to hold Janani's hand.

"And if your father doesn't agree?" asked Janani.

"Then we will do what is not right." said Ram.

Janani agreed with Ram and they both went home.

"Mom! no, please you go and talk!" "No you go!" argued Ram and his mother.

Ram's mother pushed him and he got closer to his father.

"Dad." called Ram.

"Hmm!"

"I need to discuss about something important dad." said Ram.

"Tell me" said the father.

"Life matter dad." said Ram.

"Come and take a seat." said the father as Ram walked to the table, he kept looking back at his mother.

"Finally, after college you have been loitering aimlessly without any responsibility. Your mother was feeling bad. Atleast now you seem to have some responsibility. See, we have 12 branches for our company..." "Dad, don't bore me." inturrupts Ram.

"Boring?? What kind of language are you speaking Ram? While studying in a convent you started playing cricket with the local boys. After mixing with them, look at the kind of language you are speaking." "Dad, I'm going to marry a girl" inturrupts Ram again.

"Straight to marriage is it? No love and all that?" asked the father.

"Its been 5 years, now I want to marry her." answered Ram quickly.

The father looked at the mother angrily and the mother said she didn't know anything.

"Does the poeple in the girl's house know this matter?" asked the father.

"They didn't agree dad. You go and talk." said Ram.

"We can't do all that. If they don't agree, we can't force them." said the father.

"Dad, I love that girl. Do you understand what I'm saying? I want to marry her dad." explained Ram.

"If you so stubbornly want to get married to her, get married. Thats your wish. But after that you can't stay here. You need to leave." orderednthe father.

"Dear.." said the mother, the father looked at her angrily then shenkept quiet cause she wanted her son and daughter in law to stay in their house.

"Okay. I'll leave. You keep all the wealth that you have earned, just give me all that my grandfather had earned." said Ram.

"What are you talking?" asked the mother. Ram looked at ner angrily.

"What dad? I can't go out and become a wealthy man in one song. This is not a movie. I can't waste all my youth suffering and struggling to make money and then what would Janani and I do when we are old? I want to live with her. Happily. A whole life time." explained Ram.

His father smiled. "Who is that girl?"

"A girl dad." said Ram.

"I'm sure its a girl. I don't doubt that. Who is she?" asked the father.

"Janani. Very nice girl dad. She will be suitable for our home. She cooks well, dad." said Ram.

"See.. if they agree in her house, then its okay for me too. I'll come for the marriage. If not, you carry on and get married. Its your life. I'll buy you and apartment. The both of you can stay there. I won''t come for the marriage." said the father.

"No problem. You can see it in the pictures."said Ram.

Mean while, in Janani's house, everyone gathered in the hall. Sumi, the parent amd Janani.

"I'm sorry dad. I didn't know what else to do. I had..." "Isn't your body tickling Janani? Your mother, stood infront of the U.S Embassy for 15 years. She stood there under the sun for hours. For who's sake? Was it for her sake? You buried the life of the 3 of us and found one for yourself? I'll stay in the room Janani." said the father.

"I'm sorry dad!" said Janani crying and holding on to her father and slowly going down to touch his feet and say sorry.

"Sorry dad. I don't know what to do. What I did was wrong! I will just die. I need Ram, dad!" cried Janani holding her father's feet.

"Dad, Let... her.. go dad. Let.. her go.. leave.. her...dad. I.. don't... like.. America dad. I.. like.. it here. Let her... go dad.." uttered Sumi who never talked all these years.

Her mother ran to her and hugged her as Janani sat against the wall covering her mouth wide open.

After a while, everyone were silent in the hall.

"You can get married to that Ram. We are not stopping you. But I cannot forgive you. I don't know how to forgive you. Go. Stay there. We won't come there, you don't come back here too.You can leave whenever you want." said the father.
