"Look at them."

"She's too good for him."

"They're disgusting."

"God, he is so hot."

"I want myself a construction guy too."

I tried to ignore the annoying people muttering to each other as John and I walked down the hallway, hand in hand.

One problem solved, now onto the next.

This is the first time John and I have been seen together in school other than science and I thought it would be going better.

It isn't that difficult to spot who is a construction worker around here, and people still aren't very fond of them. Most people just seem surprised that someone like me would go for him.

And I didn't care.

Well, maybe a little bit.

Of course I cared. I really cared what people thought of me and all of the looks we are getting is making me nervous. I was kind of always viewed as a golden girl. Good grades, attractive (I think), confident, fun, affable, not the type who would give up their reputation for a construction worker.

Fight the norm, right? I should just do what I want and surprise every judgmental kid here. Hopefully I was brave enough to do that.

"Are you ok?" John asked me, eyebrows furrowed in worry and confusion.

I smiled and nodded. "Yeah, I'm fine."

Suddenly, he was yanking me into a corner, pushing me against the wall gently.

"You're not fine." He said quietly, a smirk growing on his thin lips. "What's wrong?"

I looked over his shoulder nervously at the people staring at us as they walked by and my pulse sped up.

His fingers guided my chin towards him. "Don't look at them, look at me. Listen, I told you if you didn't want to do this-"

"No." I interrupted. "I do want to. I need to. It's just," I sighed. "hard. I don't know what to do."

He kissed me on the cheek, lacing his fingers with mine. "We can figure it out together, ok? It's hard for me too."

I laughed. "Really? Last time I checked, you don't seem like the kind of person who cares what people think."

He chuckled. "Then you didn't check very well. Last time I checked, and I checked, you're not the one they are saying isn't good enough for you."

I nodded, smiling back. That made me feel a little better knowing that he wasn't completely oblivious to the rude stares being cast at us.

"Ready?" He raised an eyebrow.

I swallowed, nodding as I stepped back into the hall.

Every time someone looked at us funny or whispered something to each other, he squeezed my hand, sending endorphins throughout my body, making them spread like wildfire.

We made it to my locker and I blushed as he stared at me while I loaded books into my bag. He belonged in a Nicholas Sparks novel.

"Hey, Poca, what's the capital of..."

I froze, mentally face palming myself for forgetting about my best friend.

I turned around slowly, coming face to face with Natalie whose mouth was agape as she stared at John. "Why is he staring at you like that? Why is he at your locker? Poca... Poca what's going on?"

I bit my lip, smiling nervously as I felt a hand slip around my waist. I hadn't talked to her in days, I had completely forgotten. "Um, well, me and John have kind of been dating but I might have forgotten to tell you." I said slowly, nervous at what her reaction might be.

"How did you manage to leave out the fact you had a boyfriend?! Poca! We're better than this!" I was relieved she wasn't angry at the fact that I was dating John, of all people. Then again, she didn't seem too against the construction workers in the first place.

"I'm sorry I forgot to tell you, it's just that a lot has happened lately and I didn't have a lot of time."

She looked from me to John. "Since we are here, I have to give you the talk now."

I was confused what she meant until his hand was gone from my waist and I heard the slam of the lockers.

"If you ever hurt her, I will personally beat the crap out of you, got it?"

I had never seen John look so scared before.

He nodded quickly. She smiled at him, releasing her fist from his shirt. Then she clapped her hands, grinning. "Poca has a boyfriend!"

I rolled my eyes and took his hand again, the bell ringing. "I will see you later, ok?"

She winked at him. "Don't do anything you're going to regret!"

I couldn't help but laugh as she skipped off, leaving John and I alone.

"Isn't she just a ball of sunshine?" He chuckled.

"She has her moments." I smiled at him. "I'm really happy."

He smiled back. "Me too."

Unfortunately, that happy wasn't going toast very long.
