“So when we going to that doctors appointment?” I asked. Jane picked up her keys,
“Right now, you ready?” I nodded and followed her out towards her car. Jane and I headed off towards to the doctor’s office. It didn’t take us long to get there at all. I looked up at the sparking building, looks like they finished the renovation of this place.
Grey. Grey, and shiny. It seemed like everything on Madeleine Island was being upgraded, or at least the area near the harbour. The doctor’s office was a set at perfect 90̊ angle and was a clean slate of steal. The inside looked like it came out of a fancy catalogue. Jane walked up to the clear glass reception desk and I headed over to the waiting room. The room was a cream color with suede seats, couches, and even suede tables. I didn't know that suede tables were even possible. There are plastic plants and tacky pictures and other ugly stuff all around the room.
I sat down in a suede chair, and picked up the latest "Animal Life" magazine. I crossed my legs and waited for Jane to join me. I heard a distinct click clack of high heels and inwardly groaned. Bianca Whitherstone walked, or should I say twitched into the waiting room. Platinum blond hair, three inch heels, and big round eyed sunglasses. Her persona screamed New York, when really Madeleine Island was more like the reject island of the coast of Prince Edward Island. My appointment would be delayed. The name Whitherstone was big on Madeleine and I'm not just saying that because her daddy's the mayor. They owned the biggest boat and house, they were filthy rich, I mean even their last name was big. Bianca twitched her way over and sadly sat on the other side of the magazine table. Maybe if I thought I was invisible she wouldn't notice me,
"Oh-m-gee! Ellie, I didn't see you there!" Her voice was shrill and filled with 'I'm so better than you are' tone. I hated, no more like loathed that stupid nickname. Seriously, is Eleanor that hard to say? I nodded at her and ducked my head behind the my magazine, hoping she would forget I was there. She raised her sunglasses on her head. Her raccoon eyes blazed back at me. I mean think about it, black outline with dark, and I mean dark, green eyes. “Hey, did you hear about the fabulous party at my house this weekend? It is all people are going to talk about until summer. It so big that my daddy might even hire a camera crew!” She was licking her teeth now. God how long does it take for a nurse to come and remove this parasite? A nurse with salmon scrubs walked in and Bianca flipped her glasses back over her eyes,
“You know Ellie you should really do something with your face, foundation would do wonders," she giggled and stalked away. I ignored her comment and returned to my magazine. Jane is always going on about how perfect my skin is, not a blemish in sight. Jane sat beside me and looked off to where Bianca just exited.
“Was that-?”
“Yup.” Jane just nodded and clicked on the television.
"Eleanor Bast." I put down the magazine and followed her through the glass doors.
The cubicles reflected the outside of this place, grey and shiny. I sat down on the bed covered in a thin sheet of white paper. I waited for my usual, family doctor to walk in. Instead another, sterner woman walked in, I didn't recognize her at all. The nice thing about a small place is that everyone knows each other. At the same time it’s a pain in my ass. She pushed a chair in front of me and sat down. She looked at the clipboard, then at me with a stern look.
"How have you've been feeling lately?" I noticed she didn't have pen,
"Fine."
"Any scratching or tiredness lately?" Okay the scratching caught me off guard, I wonder if there's a rash going around.
"I've been sleeping more than usual." We were eye level now, her face even more stern than when she walked in, but I wasn't about to back down before someone I didn't know.
"Do your eyes hurt at any time? Has your eyesight improved in the dark?" What the hell was this? Isn't there someone else who does eyes?
"I've been able to seen in the dark my whole life, but no, my eyes do not hurt."
"How fast have you've been clocked at running?" Lucky for her I was on the track team, so of course I knew my time, but I couldn't help to be cocky,
"A minute better than the junior girls' state record." Her eyes flashed at me.
"Any muscle spasms or cramps?"
"Sure, I guess."
"What was the longest you slept this month?"
"Fourteen hours, but-"
"Any headaches or memory loss."
"Well I misplace some things-"
"Do you hear ringing in your ears at any time?"
"Sometimes when I sleep, what-"
"Any strange food cravings lately?"
"I dunno, I guess more meat-"
"Does your skin ever feel too tight?"
"Yes. No. Wait, what?"
"How old were you when you parents were murdered?"
