I snapped open my eyes in shock of what I was about to do and stared back at Veronica with wide eyes. She, too, was looking at me with confusion etched on every feature of her face.
"No," I mumbled but I was loud enough for everyone to hear in this pin-drop silence. A few gasps escaped the mouths of people who had come here to witness the end of my bachelor life.
"What?" she asked with wide eyes as if she couldn't believe what I had just said.
Just as I was about to repeat myself and tell the world that I do not take Veronica as my lawfully wedded wife, the door of the hall opened, making all of us look at the new entrant. Murmurs started spreading in the hall as everybody looked at the little Asian boy who was probably around six or seven years old. He stopped in the centre of the hall and stared right in the front with his black eyes.
"This wedding can't happen," he said in his little voice, making everyone gasp again.
"What?" Veronica asked again in a much ridiculed voice.
"He is my father," the boy said, his Asian tone very much prominent in his accent and pointed in the front.
"What?" the preacher shouted in complete shock as he looked at the boy who was pointing at him and calling him his father. "N... no... no! He is not my kid," he managed to say while looking around in bewilderment. How in the world was my wedding related to the precher's son was something I couldn't understand. But, I wasn't complaining for the interruption. The murmurs got louder but were cut off when the door burst open again and someone else entered.
Kim
Probably, the biggest smile of my life stretched on my face when I spotted her coming towards me with a determined look on her face. She stopped beside the little Asian boy who was apparently, the preacher's son. She bent down slightly and that's when I noticed her belly that was all swollen up as if she was pregnant. She reminded me of the day when we had taken drive from the happy family from Nashville to Hendersonville.
'What the hell is she doing?' This question alone ran in my head as I looked at her with my eyebrows furrowed together in confusion.
She moved the kid's pointed hand slightly so it was pointed directly at me, and this action made me change my confused expressions to that of complete bewilderment.
'What?' I shouted in my head as I looked at her with eyes as wide as saucers and my jaw touching the ground. Mentally, I tried to recall my 'fun times' with many girls. I always supported safe s*x. But, then again, c**doms were only ninety eight percent safe. Could this little boy be the result of the unsafe two percent?
No! It couldn't be. The kid didn't resemble me in any way.
She sighed very audibly and looked up at me. "This is what happens when a son doesn't get his father's love for years. He is not your son, sir," she told the preacher with misery in her voice. Her eyes shifted back to me and she herself pointed her hand towards me. "He is Keith's son."
This resulted in eruption of much louder gasps and the murmurs changed to loud chattering. "Oh, I'm a granny!" Mom squealed as she got up from her seat in excitement. Everyone's attention went towards her and she realized her mistake as she slowly sat back on her seat. And, all I could do was stare at Kim with confusion built up in every nerve of my body.
"But... what the hell are you saying?" Veronica screeched and her question was directed towards Kim.
Kim gave her a wide eyed look; a look that by now I was very well aware of - her fake innocent face. "You don't believe me? Ask Keith. He'll tell you that we spent a complete night together eight years back." She motioned towards me with her hand and then, looked at me with the look that said that 'I should better continue with the act if I want to be alive'.
