"How was your flight?"
"Good, I fell asleep during half of it. What time is it over there?"
"Uhh, three am?"
"Jen!" I scold, and I watch her through my phone screen as she rolls her eyes at me.
"It's fine! I just didn't want to wake you up since I knew you would be jet lagged."
"Really?"
"Of course! You're my best friend, and I felt the need to stay up just to see how you're doing after that long flight." Jen says, a smile on her face, and I can't help but laugh.
"You were talking late with Andy again, weren't you?" I ask, but it comes out as a statement, and by the look on Jen's face I didn't need an answer.
"Okay, but can you blame me? He's beyond hot, he's hilarious, and his smile literally sends me to the heavens. Even though you won't admit it, I'm sure even you have a tiny crush on him."
I involuntarily gag, then poorly hiding it with a cough. Jen was right, Andy had turned out pretty good looking, but I would never be over the fact that he was also the third grade boy that ate liquid glue and threw it up in front of me.
"I know you're thinking about the glue incident, and you've got to stop." Jen tells me, reading my mind.
"Can't help it, sorry."
"Whatever, at least there's no competition between us on Andy. You've got to find yourself a man, though. Seriously. Love your independent woman thing, but you and me both know there have to be some hotties in Barcelona."
"I'm not here to find some hot Spain guy, Jen." I tell her, lying through my teeth.
Okay, if I'm being completely honest, I'm here for the sight-seeing (not just people wise), and the experience of being in Spain, despite this being my second visit.
Before the thoughts come rolling in, no, I'm not dumb rich. But ever since second grade I've been obsessed with traveling, and had coin jars to kick start me on the journey. Those coin jars, however, got me enough money for one plane ticket to Spain.
That's where Aunt Penny comes in.
She was by far my favorite aunt out there, and by far my richest aunt out there. She loved me like her own daughter, since she never had children, and always reminded me how special I was to her.
As awful as it is though, she passed away my freshman year, due to the c-word.
She left an insane amount of money to my name.
Technically, all this money was in my parent's possession, until I turned eighteen. Me being a "mature, seventeen year old girl", my parents let me in on the cash, and that basically planned out my summer for me.
"Lying is a sin, Nora."
"And it's a good thing I haven't lied yet." I tell her, lying again.
"You're impossible. Oh, I forgot to ask, which aunt are you staying with again?"
"Carmelita, why?"
"Could you maybe get her to send me that pie recipe? The one she made when she came over to your house, remember?"
"Jen, that was like two years ago." I say, partially impressed on how she remembered that and how she remembered which aunt it was that made it.
"And? I sill have dreams about that pie, Nora. Seriously."
"Okay, I'll get it for you."
"Mhm, and get yourself a guy's number too." Jen not-so-subtly drops into the conversation jokingly, and I groan.
"Too bad th- Oh my God!" I stop mid-sentence when I look at the time, and realize that I'm supposed to be ready in 15 minutes.
I was still in my pajamas, laying in bed.
"I'm guessing you've gotta run?"
"Yes ma'am. I'll tell you all about my day later, okay? Love you lots, get some sleep please!"
"Bye Mom!"
After I hang up, I quickly jump out of my bed and head to the bathroom sink, mentally giving myself a high five for showering last night so that I wouldn't have to do it now.
Ten minutes later, I'm dressed and applying mascara, thinking that I might as well put a little effort into my face. Afterwards I slip my sandals on, then grab my phone and head down the stairs.
Now, even though I had enough money to rent out a week in a hotel, my parents thought it better that since I had family in Barcelona, I might as well be staying with them.
"¡Buenos días, Norita!" My aunt calls out when I enter the kitchen, and I laugh as she wraps me in a larger than life hug, releasing me after a few seconds.
"Ready for our day out?" Julie, my cousin asks. She was only a year older than me, yet acted way more mature than I ever could in a year.
"Nora, Julie says I can't come with you guys! Tell her you want me to come!" Max, my ten year old cousin wines, and I smile at him.
"We can't let you come, Max." I say, and before he can complain again I whisper into his ear something I knew would make him stay at home.
"If we did, then you would know the surprise that we're getting you."
"Surprise? Really?" Max says, his eyes lighting up, and I nod my head.
"But if we want to go get that surprise, we should go now." Julie tells him, and we both say our goodbyes before walking out the door.
"Okay, where to first?" I ask, and my cousin shrugs.
"Well, I don't know about you, but I haven't eaten yet. And I'm starving."
Just as she says that, I realize that the last meal I had was on an airplane, and barely counted as a full meal.
"Yo tambien. Know any good places to stop and eat for breakfast?" I ask, and she nods, a grin on her face.
"Niña, the place I'm about to take you is going to change your life."
