“In due time Lord,” Nana Augustine spoke to herself, “In due time.” She headed back for the kitchen to finish breakfast.
Crater sat on the toilet and just wished she had everything of Essence. From her name to her dad, you name it, she wished for it. Crater and Essence shared the same mom but not the same dad. Crater doesn’t even know her dad; all she had is a note from the hospital, on the day of which she was born, written by him saying, “I can’t do this -C.j.”, and nothing more, nothing less. She then began thinking on the many occasions her mom promised to keep the two of them together, so they would be best friends and sister at the same time. When she died her promise almost wasn’t kept. Essences dad wanted custody of her when their mom died. But Nana Augustine was determined to fight him with every blow she could give, because she knew her daughter’s last wish while lying in a coma for 7 hours. Crater was knocked from her thoughts because of the last sound of her mother’s heave for air repeated through her head. Crater remembers her mother’s every feature, from head to toe. What killed her heart is that she only couldn’t remember her voice but knew every word she’d spoken to her. Crater hit the shower and stepped in, allowing the hot steamy water to wash her tears away. She didn’t stay in there for too long because she knew the press for time. She hopped out and stared into the mirror for a moment. Taking her sisters advice after her hygiene routine she wrapped her towel around herself tightly, and began placing her hair into a bun she’d witnessed her sister do many of times. When she was done she walked back into her room and seen that Essence wasn’t in there. She shut the door behind her and began putting on her clothes. Her Nike leggings had the check mark and Nike logo printed on the calf in neon yellow and pink, so she decided something different.
“Pink Air Maxes it is!” she said to herself. She thought about to different kind of top today. She reached into Essences drawer and got a skin tight black tank that had the words ‘JUST DO IT’ written in neon yellow. “Titties to fat or whaa!” she joked to herself. She placed her hands on her hips as she walked closer to the full length mirror. “I am cute huh?” she asked as if someone else was in the room. She grabbed a black jacket just in case it became cold in school. She tossed on some accessories and made her way to the kitchen.
“YESS boo! See NOW, your worthy of claiming!” Essence spoke with attitude. Crater just slightly rolled her eyes. She could never get a straight up compliment from her. It just always had to be on the low insulting and worthy of taking at the same time, every time.
“Girl don’t you know how to give a compliment?” Nana Augustine asked Essence. Nana was a tall light brown skin woman; she was a heavy set woman but carried it on all the perfect places. Nana was one of those grandmothers that had a soul of a warrior; she could take on the world if she wanted. She had a series of medical issues but never let that weigh her down, she kept a smile at all times.
“Nana...” Essence whined sarcastically, “could you just please pass the pancakes.”
“Here girl be nice to your sister. Yall needa respect each other, yall all ya got” Nana spoke true words. The girls just nodded.
“Hey, umm ‘sister’… wanna pass me the pancakes?” Essence asked sarcastically with a smile. In which land a heavy handed smack right across her arm nearest to Nana Augustine. An evil chuckle came from Crater. The girls secretly loved each other deeply, but one loved the power of her appeal and one was deeply insecure; I’m sure you can pick the characteristic of the two. The girls finished breakfast and knew they had to make their way to the bus stop in time to catch it to school. They grabbed their backpacks and gym bags out of the front door closet and made their way out the front door.
“Have a blessed day girls. Be nice and always flash your pretty smiles. Remember it takes less to do that than frown!” Nana Aug always spoke true words.
“Gotchuu Nana” Essence replied, trying to give Nana a hand dap and roll out so she could catch her girls. She only was pulled back and really embarrassed in front of her girls with his great huge Nana gave her. “Nana pleeeassse mann”
“Man me again!” Nana released from the hug and looked in her face so she knows she was serious.
“I love you Nana” Essence said as a getaway free card with a kiss.
“Mhmm, I love you more, wait for your sister too” Nana slightly yelled to Essence as she jogged to catch up with the girls. “You got everything honey?” she asked Crater.
“Yeah, yeah I think so.” Crater answered filling her backpack and gym bag. Crater didn’t look directly at her Nana because she was always nervous as to what advice she would give her next; it was always something different each day.
“In due time.” Nana Augustine advised her with a brush of the nose. Crater didn’t quite know what she meant but she didn’t question either, she always knew the answer of her Nana, ‘seek the Lord and he will guide you blah blah blah’ Crater spared herself. “Nana Loves you Crater Maliah, don’t you every forget that. God has such high advances for you in life. Don’t stray away too far.” She could see her Nana’s genuineness and sincerity, tears whelmed in her Nana’s eyes as she spoke.
“I Love you too Nana, thank you” Crater slightly mumbled.
“HEY LOVE BUG, YOU WANNA COME ON? ANY DAY NOW” Essence yelled with jealousy in her voice. Crater knew Essence only wished she spoke words of wisdom upon her life like that.
