When he walked into the grand hall, he was surprised to see that his father was no where to be seen. After asking one guardsman he had found out that John was in his compartments and awaiting Deans return. He had commanded that Dean go straight to him on his return and with a heavy heart, dean obeyed.
This was it.
This was when he would lose all respect from his father after working so hard for so long to earn it from him. Guilt and sorrow overrode every bone and other feeling in his body as he knocked on the large oak doors that led into his fathers rooms. He waited for a moment before finally entering to see his father at his desk, signing some documents with his back turned to dean.
"I am home, father." Deans voice shook but he stopped the stuttering and sorrow from getting to it. He kept it as steady as he possibly could.
John quickly turned around and stood up, his eyes widening at the sight of his sons bashed up face.
"What-?" John begun but dean cut him off. Wanting to get this done as quickly as he possibly could.
"I was defeated. I have lost him." Dean hung his head. "An alpha challenged my wolf for Castiel and I lost."
He could not keep the sadness and shame from his voice this time, and would dare not look back up at his fathers face. But dare he must and when he did he found his father nodding seriously.
"I know." He said quietly and Deans mouth dropped and confusion clouded his eyes.
"What do you mean you know?" Dean asked quickly. "How could you possibly know?"
John smiled slowly and sadly before moving towards dean. When he got there he passed him and led the way to his door.
"Follow me."
They both exited the kings rooms and made their way to Mary's garden as the king had called it in memory of his wife. Barely any words passed between them but John chuckled lightly as the reached the doors of the garden.
"Do you think you're the first wolf to lose his omega to a wolf of the wild? I think no less of you son, just remember that." Deans heart lifted a fraction at his fathers words and he finally opened the door.
The garden was the most beautiful place of the castle and hell every flower that could survive in the climates of Lawrence. Ornaments stood and hung at every corner of the garden and glass jingled together in the summer breeze setting a calming sound and atmosphere throughout the entire patio. A bench stood staring over the large cliff that the castle was built upon and stared out towards the large forest up ahead where the sun was setting behind the trees.
Upon the bench sat a figure, but dean did not even have to see him before he knew who was already sat there staring out towards the forest.
"I will leave you now, come to me when you have a chance, Dean. There is much to talk about." With that, his father left.
The figure stood up from the bench and turned around to face Dean who was slowly walking over. Dean stopped a few feet away from the person and stood staring at him with a mixture of emotions running around his eyes and face. Shock, sorrow, guilt, happiness. Dean could not decide which one to land on.
"Hello, Dean."
"Hey, Cas." Dean croaked, still staring at the omega. Castiel smiled slightly and stood a step closer to Dean who flinched slightly.
"What are you doing here?" Dean asked stupidly, not being able to think of anything else to say.
"It's a beautiful garden..." Castiel answered, pretending to misunderstand the question.
"Not here. I meant here, at the castle."
"I live here." Castiel answered simply with a stiff smile which confused dean even more.
"Are you- are you trying to pretend that you have no idea what happened in the woods?" Dean asked sternly and the look on Castiels face made him believe that that was exactly what the young omega was trying to do.
"Dean-"
"No, Castiel. I want to know what happened when I left and why you're truly back here. Please don't lie to me, it's disrespectful." Dean frowned and crossed his arms over his chest tightly, dreading what Castiel was going to say. He didnt want to hear that Castiel was back out of pity or even duty. But he had to know why. He just had to.
"I'm back because I want to be." Castiel replied in a defeated voice. "And also because I didn't really have a choice."
There is was. The duty. Knowing that he was in a marriage and having to come back because of his family and-
"The wolf..." Castiel cut off Deans thoughts. "It wouldn't let me stay with Adam. Even though I wanted to." He paused and gave dean an apologetic look. "You asked me not to lie to you."
Dean nodded and gave him a gesture to carry on what he was saying. He didn't fully understand why the wolf wouldn't let him stay with Adam when the alpha won him fair and square.
"There was a battle, going on inside my mind between me and the beast."
"Fire." Dean cut in with the wolfs name as if he was defending it and Castiel rose his eyebrows in surprise but brushed it off quickly.
"We were arguing. I was mad at it for making you both fight and how even though he had given me what I wanted, he had hurt you in the process. When Adam came over to us, he was leaning down to touch its head and the wolf snapped at him, almost biting his hand off. It spoke to him."
"What did he say?" Dean asked.
"It said that Adam hadn't won him at all. The test wasn't about who was stronger in a fight. It was about who he thought was the most worthy to have him. He sees himself as... of lack of a better word... a king." Castiel said, pulling a slight disgusted face. Dean would never let on to him how he actually secretly admired Castiels wolf. "Adam was not happy. I could see his heart breaking within his eyes when the wolf whispered this thought to him."
"I still don't fully understand." Dean said stupidly, not fully grasping what Castiel was saying. The omega hugged and looked at Dean in annoyance.
"Are you really doing to make me spell it out for you?" Castiel groaned. "It wanted to see for itself which alpha would be better suited for him. In strength and wits and power. The wolf saw that even though you lost the fight, you fought until you could no longer stand just to keep him... to keep me." He said these last words quieter with a slight blush. "I don't know how it decided but I think I can guess the point. I think it was when you still held your head up high even after losing and professed that you could still beat him if you wanted to, the respect he had for you shot through the roof and he disdained the way Adam boasted about winning. That's always been a fault in him. Something I myself have never liked either."
Castiel shook his head sadly and fell silent before finally remember that dean was there and looked up to catch the green eyes in his own blue ones.
"He chose me." It was more of a statement than a question but when dean uttered the words he was shocked to find how giddy he was about being chosen by the wolf. He could not find the strength to hide the smile from Castiels stern eyes. However the sternness turned to pleasant shock when Dean broke out into the biggest smile which made Castiel blush deeply.
"Good." Dean nodded happily.
"Good?" Castiel asked. "I thought that you would have been happier if the wolf had chosen Adam and you could have gone back to you bachelor life."
Dean shook his head.
"You really do have me all wrong, little darling." Dean whispered softly and stepped another foot closer towards his husband, filling in the empty gap between them and brushing his hands against Castiels before holding onto them gently. He raised the omegas hands up to his mouth and kissed each one. "A bachelors life would be dull and boring now that I have had even the tiniest glimpse of what it is like being married and mating with the rarest omega on this planet. Never could I go back to that life, now that I have had you."
It was only when he had spoken then that Dean realised that he had meant every single word.
