Dreams and nightmares are funny things!
I walked down and Navya was no where around. I wanted to eat something. Lemon rice. I wanted lemon rice. I opened the kitchen backdoor which opens in the backyard, through the garden on the opposite end was the outhouse. Cold gush of wind filled the kitchen. Even Navya's pregnant, and she's seen a lot too, she takes care of me, but what about her? She works here is a whole other thing, but to me, she's a friend. I smiled and prepared lunch for her.
--------"What are you doing?" Navya asked as she came into the kitchen, through the back door. "And since when you spend all your time in the kitchen, without me?" She asks me coming closer.
"I am knitting, and cooking. I don't know why but, I want to, and I fell good doing it." I say looking down and smiling a bit.
"Aww, so the pregnancy hormones are already hittin' you!" She said pulling my cheeks, which were no longer as full as they were. "Go, have breakfast, it's there, I cooked it. " I said to Navya pointing my eyes towards the breakfast. "Hmmmm...." she made the sound sniffing the food, "smells amazing..." before she could complete we head a banging sound, making both of us jump. She signaled me to be seated and went out of the kitchen to check.
"Madhyam sir ..." she said hesitatingly. And it made me stand up with the knitting wool in my hand and step to steps backwards. Why is he here? He wasn't supposed to come today. He was in London. He wasn't supposed to be here. My breathing raged. I started breathing audibly heavily. "Yes Madhyam, what do you think, han...." he roared at Navya like a lion, she to stepped back in fear.
"And you, little lady. What the hell do you think, I go out for a month, and you go out of this premises. HOW DARE YOU?" He shouted on top of his voice making me walk backwards and tumble on my feet and I feel on my behind. "Sir, please don't. It's my fault. Sir please." Navya was standing behind requesting him but, he , he looking into my eyes with the rage like no one else existed except us in the room.
"Answer me Nandani." He said clenching his teeth. "Answer me DAMN IT! WHY THE HELL DO YOU DARE TO STEP OUT OF THE HOUSE. ANSWER ME DAMN IT OR ELSE...." he shouted and lifted up his hand in air to hit me. I closed my eyes in fear and was prepared to take a slap, but I heard Navya's shout instead, " she's pregnant. Please sir, don't. I took her to the hospital. She's pregnant. Please.' I heard her voice and eye looked at them . She was standing beside Madhyam, holding his hand, which was raised to slap me.
I looked at Madhyam's eyes, he stared at me. With wide eyes. Slowly, scarily, I shook my head in yes. Navya released his hand, he came down to me, he took his hand and pressed it against my stomach. Navya moved back a little, and left through the backdoor.
Madhyam moved his hand over my stomach, "My baby, My baby boy, My son." He claimed and and unknown fear aroused in me. What if?
He placed his other hand on my cheek, creased it a little, and then a tight slap. " but that doesn't mean you leave the house without me, and yes, no one, ever, ever stops my hand, understood? Now stand up. My son needs to rest." He said and pulled me upstairs with him.
---------
Navya was asking me the same question since quite a time and now she was annoyed. "Nandani, what will you have for dinner? Nandani? Will you stop your knitting for a while and answer me? Nandani....""Why did you do that?" I asked cutting her off.
"What?" She asked keeping her one hand on the kitchen platform and leaned in.
"Why did you do that?" I asked firmly looking in her eyes. "I asked why did you hold Madhyam's hand?" And this time my voice cracked.
