"That's for sure," Caitlyn agreed.
"You know," Caleb spoke for the first time since I'd sat down, "Colis came after our family's settlement on Mars eight years ago."
I shifted my weight to my elbows resting on the table and comfortably watched him. His words sounded like an interesting life story about to open up. That was progress from where we'd been days ago.
"I remember it like it was yesterday unfortunately," Caitlyn piped in with a frown, her eyes glazing over with the memories.
I found myself speaking before I could stop myself. "What happened?"
"Colis was seeking the minerals underneath our homes so that he could make weapons," Caleb blinked as if what he said was an everyday thing. "He attacked on a day most adults were out tending to the specialized greenhouses. Cait and I were, what, only 16?"
"Yeah," she swallowed and closed her eyes for a moment. "We heard commotion and went out to see most of everyone we knew kneeling by the SDF- of course we didn't know who they were at that time. They grabbed Caleb and I shouldered them away. Our father fought to free Caleb-"
"He sacrificed his life for mine," Caleb blurted, his voice nothing but a whisper as he stared blankly at the table in front of him. "Colis shot him dead in front of us."
That's why you want to kill him so badly, huh?
"So you escaped and joined the rebels?" I asked softly.
"Cait and I barely got away in the gunfight that broke out. We ran until our oxygen was almost out."
"That's when we found Elijah, looking at rocks," Cait smirked.
"Hey, they were minerals that-"
"We know!" the siblings spoke at once and they laughed.
"Anyways, Dani held us at gun point while we tried to explain everything," Caleb continued. "If it weren't for Elijah, she would've killed us. He was the one to suggest taking us in."
"So we trained and aided the rebels in defeating Colis," Caitlyn paused. "I guess parts of that war was destroying your group too."
I bit back a sharp remark.
"Our father was a part of the rebel group, we found out, and he'd made sure to make the UNSA a target because of the way they'd treated him a few years before we were born. He told us stories about how terrible UNSA forces were and how they needed to be defeated as well," Caleb explained.
Reyes was staring cool, calm daggers at the younger man across from him. Caleb ignored the heavy gaze and continued on with his story.
"Caitlyn and I grew up hating UNSA for that reason. That's why we've been fighting against both for so long."
I straightened my back. "Quite a story."
Caleb leveled to meet my green eyes. "Indeed."
"I understand why you want to kill Colis so badly now," I touched his hand. "I get it too."
Caleb stared at our hands and then nodded.
"Cap-" there was a shout from the entrance to the cafeteria. "Reyes!"
