Chapter 26: Swerve

Start from the beginning

They both were asleep, as I had suspected, when Nasir came banging at their door. They had both fell off their beds and dragged themselves to their door. They opened it with the intention of giving Nasir an earful but saw him in front of their door looking almost frightened. He had told them to hurry to my room without any other explanation.

Immediately after the explanation, they resumed looking at Nasir. He couldn't stand the tension so he spoke up.
"Its her! " He shouted. "I came to get something for my wound.. This wound! And she starts saying something about an engagement. It freaked the hell out of me. " He shouted, jumpy as he did so.

Immediately afterwards, all eyes were on me. However my eyes were on Ya Nur, wondering what he had to say about the affair.

Let me share another information to you regarding my eldest brother. Ya Nur acts more than he speaks; he would rather let his fists and kicks relay information to whoever. Thus, when we were  younger, dealing with people that pestered us truly was him being in his comfort zone. However all sentimental matters were beyond him, they are things that he finds exceptionally troublesome.

As I stared at Ya Nur, I witnessed his famous scowl of confusion and the popular stance he does; a step back, fold his arms across his chest and tilt his head  further from the cause of distress; me, in this case. He pretended to be deep in thought but in actuality was praying for the moment to quickly pass.

Only I was conscious of his discomfort.

"Ya Nur! Say something!" Nasir spoke, still sounding alarmed.

Again our attention shifted to Ya Nur.

He clenched his jaw as he looked up. His eyes fell on mine and he looked away, without an iota of discretion. He looked at my other brothers as they waited for him anxiously and he gulped.

"Uhmm.. "He began to stammer. "Najib! What should we do? " He immediately said, rushing out of the limelight as he pushed Ya Najib into it.

Ya Najib pursed his lips together as he watched me.
"Let's hear what we ought to hear from the horse's mouth. " He declared.
While Nasir kept staring at all our faces, Ya Nur kept nodding his head vigorously.

"Well? Nura? What do you have to say about all of this? " Ya Najib asked, his full attention on me.

Initially, all I could do was freeze and stare at Ya Najib aghast.

'What should I do? '

"Uhmm.. Actually, it's nothing. "I managed to say after being silent for a while. While my older brothers looked at me not convinced, the youngest of us all couldn't help but glare at me.

"It is NOT nothing! Did you or did you not mention a proposal when I walked into your room? " Nasir asked, his voice raised.

Again, I was forced to be silent. Lying would have been easier, at the tip of my tongue. But lying has never stopped with just one wrong fact, you require a mountain worth of lies to cover the initial lie and thus begins a cycle. Also, had I lied, what would have happened to the respect Nasir had for me?

"Yes. I did. " I spoke softly. Nasir let out a sigh while the other two looked at me, in shock.  "However, this is just a misunderstanding. So.. You all can go back to bed. " I added.

"Suleiman freaking proposed?! " Ya Nur shouted as he looked very angry.

"Like I said. It is a misunderstanding and-" I got interrupted.

"What is so confusing about it?! " He shouted some more. All that anger for reasons unknown, were  targeted at me. I couldn't help but be nervous.
