Chapter Twenty-Six

Start from the beginning

I can't help but let out a laugh at his expression. "I suppose I did have something to fear," I tease, and he rolls his eyes.

"Shut up, Medlor. At least I'm following directions."

"Stepping on your partner's foot was definitely not part of the dance."

"Maybe it should be. It could use some excitement," he sighs.

"I'm fine with that, but only if I get to do the stepping," I say.

He laughs, all of a sudden. I stare at him with a curious smile on my face, my eyebrows furrowing. When he finishes - not that he laughs for long - I can swear there's a real smile on his face.

"Your date is going to be a very lucky guy," he says.

I want to question his display of...well, happiness, but instead I ignore it, rolling my eyes. "Don't remind me that I have to find a date."

"I can imagine it would be a lot of pressure," he says. "You shouldn't have a problem finding someone though."

I snort, and he raises an eyebrow.

"What?"

"I'll have a huge problem finding someone. Rom, Harry, and Neville are the extent of guy friends I have around, and I don't want to mess that up by having the press turn it into something other than going as friends," I explain.

"Then find someone you don't care about losing," he suggests, shrugging a little. "You and Potter are in first place. You're the talk of the schools, you could probably get anyone you want."

I tilt my head a little to the side. "I guess you're right."

"You know I'm right."

"Hey, we're pretty good at this," I realize, taking a glance down at our feet.

He lets a small laugh out. "We are."

••••••••••

"I'm so sorry you had to go with Malfoy," Hermione says for the thousandth time, and I roll my eyes.

"It's fine," I laugh, trying to keep it at that. I have a feeling they wouldn't believe me saying it was actually a pleasant experience.

"I would have stayed if I knew you'd be paired with that," Ron says sourly.

"How did it go?" Harry asks.

"It was okay. He didn't talk much," I lie, "only stepped on my foot once."

"Lucky," Hermione mutters.

"Hey, Elizabeth!"

I turn my head to the side to see a guy walking toward me. I frown a little as I slow to a stop as he comes to stand in front of me. "Do I know you?"

"I'm not sure," he admits, running a hand through short, light brown hair that just falls over at the tips. He has a small smile on his face, his arms crossed over himself, except the position doesn't close him off; it's almost an addition to his obvious confidence, his posture adding to the look. "I'm from Beauxbatons, I was a couple years above you. Could I talk to you?"

I glance back at the others, Hermione nodding with a smile and slightly wide eyes. I turn back, nodding as well. "Sure."

I follow him to the side of the corridor by a window, pulling my books close to my chest as he leans against the wall.

"My name is Adam," he introduces. "I was wondering if you'd like to be my date to the Yule Ball."

My eyes widen a little. I open my mouth for a moment before closing it, then letting out a small laugh. "Wow, I-um..."

"You don't need to answer me right now. I just thought that you seem pretty cool," he tells me, his lips curling up further. I can feel my face heating up, but I just smile.

"I'm just a little surprised, I didn't expect to get asked," I say, biting my lip.

"Really? I don't see how you wouldn't have seen it coming." He glances back to a group of boys waiting for him down the corridor. "I'll let you think. Just let me know, okay?"

He starts walking away, but I quickly take a step forward.

"Wait! Adam!"

He turns, a knowing smile on his face. "Yes?"

"I'll go with you," I say, hoping that my cheeks aren't too red right now. He raises an eyebrow.

"I'm happy to hear it. See you, Elizabeth."

I give a small wave as he walks away, unable to suppress the smile on my face. I turn to walk back to the common room.

Wow, is all I can think.

A/N Hahaha I know I'm mean by introducing some ship again and then taking it away
