Season 3, Episode 18: The Same Mistakes

Start from the beginning

   Elenor turns down the hallway at The Monroe Palm Springs, her yellow denim shorts making her skin look extra tan. She heads for the elevator, her long auburn hair spilling down her back as she goes. She stops in her tracks, feeling someone's eyes dig into her back. She stares at the elevator doors in front of her, telling herself to turn around. "Turn around." Elenor tells herself feeling like something is facing her, something that isn't supposed to even be anywhere near her. "Turn around." She tells herself again but before she can, she hears a loud shot and then looks down at her chest to see her inner shoulder gushing out blood.
   Elenor jerks awake in her bed that morning, breathing heavily as she sits up. Her head is sweaty and her hair sticks to her neck. She swallows, the dream still fresh in her mind. feels the wound on her shoulder as if it was just put there. She no longer has her sling on. Elenor pulls back her off the shoulder night shirt, looking at the scar that the doctors had to sew up. The back where she was actually shot looks worse. Elenor pulls her covers up to her chest even though she's hot. Emerson flashes through her head again. Why didn't she turn around? She could've just spun around and tell him not to do anything. She could've done something.
   "Hey, if you don't start moving now you're going to be late for school." Mrs. Chai peeps her head into Elenor's bedroom.
   "I'm going." Elenor tells her, staying put. Her mom leaves and Elenor looks around her bedroom, terrified to move.
~~~(END SONG)~~~
   Harrow and Kai walk side by side through the parking lot of Seaview towards the main doors of the school. The sky is clear and the sun is hotter than usual. Harrow smiles up at the building, excited to see Israel when she goes inside. That hook up in his car the other night was a long time waiting. That was just what she needed. Being that close to Israel was... perfect. There are no other words to describe it. She doesn't even see herself as a rebound since Tatiana had JUST broken up with him but at least they did it when they weren't still together. THAT would be bad.
   "Wanna share some of that happiness with me?" Kai grunts. He's obviously still a little distraught over Cambridge no longer being here but Harrow has noticed him getting better day by day. She doesn't expect him to just be okay within the blink of an eye.
    "No, actually." Harrow walks through the door after some freshmen holds it open for them. "Because that would involve you having sex with Israel as well."
   "You had sex with Israel?" Kai whispers like it's some big confidential secret. "Oh my God, how could you?"
   "Chill." Harrow waves her hand. "Him and Tatiana broke up. Plus, I thought you wanted us together?"
   "I do but... he moved on pretty quick." Kai points out, adjusting the strap to his messenger bag. "What if he hooked up with someone else right after you?"
   "He didn't." Harrow smiles again, remembering how they climbed into the bed of the truck afterwards. They had a short conversation about the shooting before they dozed off under the stars. It was the most romantic thing Harrow has ever experienced. "We were with each other until sunrise."
   "Wow." Kai raises his eyebrows in surprise. "I'm glad things are working out for you."
   "Me too." Harrow chirps and then glances at his face. He talked to her a little about his situation with Aaron but she has no idea how to fix it for him- IF it's fixable. "How are you holding up?"
   "As well as I can be." Kai shrugs. "I'll get there though."
   "Well if you want to ditch or something, we can." Harrow offers.
   "So I can hear you gush about the sex you had with Israel Sepulveda?" Kai pretends to think. "I think I'll stick with school."
   "Text me if you need anything." Harrow grins, spinning around and sauntering down the hall to go find her... Israel. What is he to her? Did that night make them boyfriend-girlfriend? Did it make them friends with benefits? Did it make them something more than friends? Harrow doesn't know any of the details on what happened, she just knows that she didn't want it to end. She spots Israel shutting the door to his locker down the hall and she maneuvers her way through the students until she gets to him. "Hey you."
   "Harrow, hey." Israel manages a smile as he looks down at her. "How are you?"
   "Better now." Harrow swoons, not sure if she should kiss him or something. Time to get answers on what they are. "So I was thinking we could grab a smoothie at The Peach Pit after school. We can talk some things over."
   "Like what?" Israel awkwardly coughs.
   "Like the other night." She playfully nudges him. "I can't stop thinking about you."
   "Yeah, we need to talk about that." Israel guides her to the side of the hallway. "I don't really know how to put this."
   Harrow blinks as she looks up at him. This is it. He had an awful time the other night and now he wants nothing to do with her. Them hooking up put things in perspective for him and just proved that he doesn't want anything to do with her. "What's wrong?"
   "I feel bad about what we did." Israel nervously licks his lips. "I feel like we were just not in the right state of mind. Tatiana broke up with me, you just wanted to comfort someone... I think we did it for all the wrong reasons."
   Harrow feels like he was just slapped across the face. This can't be true, is it? Did Israel just hook up with her because he was no longer with Tatiana? Did she jump into his lap because she just wanted to make someone feel good? Was she that desperate? "I don't think it was for the wrong reasons at all."
   "I do." Israel scratches the back of his head. "We were both just finding ways to cope with things and we were there for each other. That's it."
   "But I've always been here for you." Harrow tells him in a quiet voice. "Even when I wasn't, I was." She searches his face for any sign that he might agree that the other night was special. That it wasn't just because they were at the same place at the right time. "And when I was, we never did that before. We never got that close."
   "Not physically." Israel agrees. "I just think that we should've taken things slower."
   Harrow shakes her head in disbelief. After all this time, the two of them have a chance to be back together and now he wants nothing to do with her. She purses her lips so she doesn't look too weak. "Okay." She turns around and starts down the hallway, feeling a little dizzy in the head. She feels like she just got off a super long roller coaster ride that got stuck upside down. If only that ride never stopped.
