Dumaloy sa isip ko lahat ng pangarap kong mahirap abutin. Pumasok muli sa puso ko ang pait ng hindi ko matutupad na pangako sa sarili. Hindi dahil hindi ko kaya kundi dahil hindi pagbibigyan ng pagkakataon.

Huminga ako ng malalim bago nagpatuloy. Isang bagsakan na lang, patapos na ko.

"Reyalidad. Huwag tayo mabulag sa mga ideyang kumukulong satin mula sa katotohanan. Mamuhay tayo sa kasalukuyan! Mabuhay tayo hanggang sa maabot ang pangarap! Magsikap tayo hanggang ang pangarap ay maging ating katotohanan!"

Pagkatapos bigkasin ang huling salita ay malakas na tibok ng puso ko ang tanging naririnig ko. Nakakakaba pero alam kong hindi nila ito makikita sa mukha ko. Sinisigurado ko.

Katahimikan. Mahabang katahimikan hanggang sa napuno ng malakas na palakpakan ang buong lugar. Dito na ko napangiti dahil sa wakas pumasok na sa mga isipan nila yung mga pinagsasabi ko. Sa wakas, may mga nakaintindi na rin sa mga ideyang gusto kong ipahiwatig.

"Wow. That was an amazing ending argument from the Realism team. Now, as both teams have already addressed their arguments, we're only one step closer to find out which team will bag this year's National Best Debate Team."

I know the emcee exaggerated his remark. Sobrang subjective gumamit ng adjective sa isang debate competition but I know he was only trying to hype up the audiences.

Realism VS Idealism: Students' Dream

'Yan ang topic at buti na lang napunta sa amin ang realism dahil mas maraming pwede sabihin. Ngunit marami rin naman silang nabatong argumento tulad ng sa idealism raw ang pinagmumulan ng motivation and creativity ng isang estudyante. Dahil sa pananaw na 'to, nagkaroon sila ng lakas para magpatuloy. The thought of fulfilling your dream keeps you moving forward.

But they did not emphasize that motivation and creativity couldn't stand alone if there was no action. And if we act on our dreams, only then we can live in reality. That's realism. We need to be practical and face the facts. Are we equip to fulfill this dream? If not, then we should act on it or innovate it to something more reachable.

During the debate, we mentioned names that would help us strengthen our stand. But their mistake? They also mentioned those names at their ending argument. I've been debating since high school and I've known judges would note those names once you mentioned them on the debate proper and what they really wanted in the final speech was the impact.

You need to give the audience the impact to believe all the words that will come out in your mouth are true. You need to give them the confidence to trust you that you are the one saying the truths.

This was the strategy I have been doing most especially in crowded audiences. I needed to pull their attention towards me so, the judges could see how effective my words were. Simple psychology. But, this strategy is subjective.

Other judges seek technicality. They crave for proofs and evidences that you know what you are saying and you deserve to win the title but, I believe the technicality should lies during the debate. Buhusan mo at paulanan mo ng maraming patunay na hahalili sa mga sinasabi mo.

Alam kong may punto yung mga sinasabi ko but I doubted that it was that amazing like how the emcee described my final argument. I had doubts. I will always have it. I have insecurities but I will never let other people find it out.

"Ang galing mo talaga Vin! Grabe yung confidence sa boses mo nung nagsasalita ka. Sana all hindi kinakabahan." Mahinang bulong ng katabi ko na si Jen. Minsan sa sobrang pamumuri ng mga taong tulad ni Jen di ko na alam kung bukal ba sa loob nila o totoo pa ba.

"I know right. Sigurado na pagkapanalo natin this year. Thanks to me." I confidently said kahit na naririnig ko pa rin yung malakas na kalabog sa dibdib ko.

"Wag ka nga magsalita ng tapos. Pag tayo na-jinx eh." Shunangina mo Roy, edi ikaw na pinakamatalino at pinakamagaling. Pabibo masyado yang leading na Dean's Lister ng College namin. Kainis. Alam ko namang sumali lang 'yan ng debate club dahil may incentive at kaya napili dahil magandang asset kung may isa sa amin na kayang magmemorize ng mga facts.

"Ulol. Edi sana ikaw nag-end ng argument natin. Ay di mo nga pala deserve kaya sakin binigay ni Sir Guevarra yung obligasyon." Pang-aasar ko sa pabibong 'yon. Masyadong epal.

"Pangit." Mahinang bulong niya pero narinig ko pa rin dahil nga magkakatabi kami ngayon dito sa may entablado sa unahan ng teatro kung saan ginanap ang kompetisyon ngayon.

Member ng debate club pero ad hominem umatake. Madumi. Kadiri yung mga ganiyang makipagsagutan.

I think my smile faltered for a few seconds but I did handle the situation well. It was not the first time kaya dapat lang na alam ko na gagawin ko sa mga panghuhusga nila.

"Ulol isa ka rin naman." Kung makapanghusga akala mo ako lang ginawang pangit sa mundong 'to. No sismars, dalawa kami sa stage na 'to.

19 years old na ko at sa buong buhay ko ilang beses na pinaalam sa akin ng ibang tao na hindi ako maganda. Alam ko sa sarili ko na kahit pumuti pa ako o kahit maging healthy ang buhok ko, hindi na talaga ako gaganda.

Wide forehead, flat nose, dark-colored lips, and a little longer chin. If it's not too much, it is lesser. My features are not perfectly molded together. It looks like a big city with various colonies. Magulo at mahirap maintindihan.

This is not self-pity but the truth - the ugly and painful truth.

"Vin, omg! Vin! We won!" I snapped out of my reverie with Jen's loud voice.

"Congratulations, guys!" Sabi ni Roy na feeling leader. No joke pero pabibo talaga. Kung makapagcongrats akala mo superior namin siya. Pantay-pantay kami rito pero kung kanino inatasan yung final argument nasa kaniya yung papuri kadalasan. Lahat kami may responsibilidad na ginampanan, hindi ko lang alam kung malaki ba yung sa kaniya.

We won. Yehey. As if this debate will make my face a little tolerable. As if this competition will make me find someone who will love me like how those princes charming love their damsels in distress.

Or so I thought.
